Pandora Papers: Global investigation exposes secrets of some of Nigeria’s rich and powerful

A new global investigation exposing the offshore hideaways of some of the world’s most powerful personalities is launching today after two years of discreet work by investigative journalists around the world.

The project, known as Pandora Papers, is facilitated by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), which obtained a trove of 11.9 million confidential files. The reporting, which is still ongoing, involves more than 600 journalists from 150 news organisations around the world.

This Month in the Security Council – September 2021

In the month of September, the Security Council conducted most of its work tin-person, while a few agenda remained virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our delegation continued to work closely in the “A3+1” configuration with our African brothers and sisters (Niger, Kenya, and Tunisia) on many country-specific and thematic issues.

Libyans select surprise candidate for interim PM

Geneva, Switzerland, Feb 5 – Libyan delegates at UN-led talks outside Geneva on Friday made the surprise choice of Abdul Hamid Dbeibah as prime minister of a transitional unity government to take the war-ravaged country through to elections in December.

Dbeibah was chosen along with a three-member presidency council to head a unity administration and steer the North African state towards the ballot box on December 24.

UN Security Council orders ceasefire monitors deployed to Libya: letter

United Nations, United States, Feb 4 – The UN Security Council on Thursday instructed Secretary General Antonio Guterres to deploy ceasefire monitors to war-torn Libya.

“As they examine your recommendation for an amended mandate for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the members of the Security Council request that you establish and deploy swiftly an advance team to Libya,” the council said in a letter to Guterres that was seen by AFP.

UN: Covid19 slows down international migration

The covid19 pandemic halted the increase of international migrants by nearly two million people until mid-2020, the United Nations (UN) said on Friday.

A report published by the UN, explained that there was a decrease of 27 per cent compared to mid-2019.

However, the report said that the international migrant population has grown from 173 million in 2000 to 281 million in 2020. These people represent about 3.6 per cent of the world's population today.

One of the main findings of the UN study is that two-thirds of all migrants live in just 20 countries.

Lawsuit filed for ‘TT’ children in ISIS refugee camps

FAMILIES of almost 50 children who are currently detained at various ISIS detention camps in Syria have filed legal action against the chief immigration officer for an alleged failure to provide them with travel documents so they can have their nationalities verified in their attempts to return to TT.

The application for judicial review was filed on Wednesday by attorneys Criston J Williams, Jerome Riley and Kerrina Samdeo on behalf of Amral Khan, the chief coordinator of the group of relatives with TT nationals in the Syrian war zone.
