The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) has deployed seven new high-performance tents in Kasese district, western Uganda to support school reopening in flood-affected schools.

There can probably be no more denying, at this point, that climate change is a real phenomenon. Extreme weather events globally have increased, fuelled by it. In 2021 alone, there were floods in west Germany; wildfires in Greece; winter storms in Texas; record-breaking heatwaves in Moscow; a dust storm, the worst in more than a decade, blanketed China with dust clouds towering 100 metres; tornadoes in Kentucky; typhoons in the Philippines; among so many others. All these events saw death and displacement in ways that had never been seen before.

ZIMBABWE Stock Exchange-listed cement manufacturer, Lafarge has appointed John William Stull to the group’s position of non-executive director.

The appointment is with effect from June 10, 2021.

In an update, Lafarge board chairperson, Kumbirayi Katsande described Stull as a seasoned and well-experienced business leader.

According to the UN’s World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2021 report, Latin America and the Caribbean experienced a devastating contraction of 8%  for 2020 and is expected to face moderate growth of 3.8 per cent for 2021.  “The recovery will likely remain fragile and uneven, with outlook risks tilted towards the downside,” the organization noted.
