New report urges African governments to stamp out witchcraft accusations against children

Witchcraft accusations and ritual attacks against African children are hidden and ignored, yet are one of the most gruesome forms of violence against children.

New research from African Child Policy Forum (ACPF) shows that every year, thousands of African children are accused of witchcraft and suffer ritual attacks, abuse, and physical and psychological violence, yet most governments are turning a blind eye.

Paris, France, Dec 2 – Global warming played only a minimal role in the famine that has hit Madagascar, according to a new study published Thursday which contradicts a UN description of the crisis as a “climate change famine”.

The southern Indian Ocean island off Africa has been hit by its worst drought in four decades.

The UN’s World Food Programme said last month that more than 1.3 million people there were considered to be in a food security crisis or emergency as a result.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 1 – Regional health officials have officially unveiled the Eastern Africa Regional Collaborating Centre (EA-RCC) in a move aimed at stepping up the fight against emerging and re-emerging disease threats in the region.

The centre to be based in Kenya has been operating within the Africa Centers for Disease Control (CDC) framework with an objective to ensure effective preparedness and response to current public health threats in the context of COVID 19 and beyond.

A resurgence of Bubonic plague in Ituri province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is putting young lives at risk, the UN Children’s Fund, UNICEF, warned on Tuesday.

ABIDJAN – Thirteen African Heads of State and governments concluded their one-day meeting in Abidjan today with a strong resolution to accelerate economic recovery from the shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, scale-up investments in human capital, and increase their job creation efforts. They called for a robust twentieth replenishment of the World Bank Group’s International Development Association (IDA20) to support these efforts.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC) lifts Liberia’s COVID-19 crisis to Level4, indicating that the West African nation has a Very High Level of COVID-19 at the moment.

Accordingly, the CDC issues a travel advisory, cautioning U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Liberia for now.

The advisory posted Monday, June 28, 2021, on the website of the Embassy of the United States near Monrovia says if a U.S. citizen must travel to Liberia, said traveler should get fully vaccinated before coming.

Project to promote decent work opportunities in the fisheries sector launched

The International Labour Organization (ILO), with support from the European Union (EU), recently launched the Sustainable Supply Chains to Build Back Better (SSCBBB) project which will focus on promoting decent work opportunities in the fisheries sector in Namibia.

The project is part of a global programme for the promotion of decent work in global supply chains. The project will run from April 2021 to March 2023.

One of Barbados’ leading researchers in pharmacology is suggesting that authorities urgently start to explore the use of herbs with medicinal properties to prevent and treat various illnesses including the COVID-19 virus.

Making reference to the development of the COVID Organics in Madagascar, which is made up of Artemisia and other endemic medicinal plants, Dr Damien Cohall said Barbados should not dismiss the idea of developing treatment for COVID-19 and the range of chronic non-communicable diseases plaguing the island.

Group not buying Wickham’s explanation

A public spat between members of the Rastafarian community and noted political scientist Peter Wickham is continuing, with one outspoken member of the Rastafari movement dismissing Wickham’s recent explanation of the comments he made regarding vaccination.

In fact, Rastafari advocate Paul Simba Rock said Wickham’s latest explanation was nothing more than a “distasteful stereotyping of Rastafari”.

Members of the community had earlier indicated that they were opposed to taking the COVID-19 vaccine.
