Tanzania grain trucks stuck at Kenya border

Tanzania has imposed a requirement on grain traders to get an export permit before shipping maize out of the country, in a policy shift that has locked already bought stocks of grain by Kenyan millers at the border.

Kenyan millers say the new requirement could paralyse their operations at a time scarcity of grain and other costs of production have conspired to push the price of flour towards Ksh200 ($1.70) for a two-kilo packet.

Millers say the requirement was not there before after the two countries resolved their trade dispute last year.

A police investigator on Thursday June 16 tabled various pieces of evidence in court in an attempt to link TV journalist Jacque Maribe and Joseph Irungu alias Jowie to the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani more than three years ago.

The investigating officer, Chief Inspector Maxwel Otieno, also told court that Mr Irungu changed clothes twice -- at the journalist’s place and at the victim’s house.

Mr Otieno said homicide detectives confiscated and investigated more than 40 items, including clothes, swabs of blood substances, DNA samples, a firearm and a bullet.

June 16, 2022 (ENA) East African countries should prioritize peace and stability in order to accelerate regional economic integration, African Affairs Director-General Fesseha Shawel said.

The director-general at Ministry of Foreign Affairs told ENA that most of the countries in the East African region are in transition and it is important that they prioritize peace and stability before striving for regional integration.   

East Africa's private sector wants rules of origin finalised

Arusha. The private sector in the East African region wants finalisation of Rules of Origin under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) speeded up.

The call was made early this week in Nairobi by the business leaders during a consultative meeting organised on AfCFTA and Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA).

It emerged at the forum co-organised by the East African Business Council (EABC) and Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA) that 43 out of 55 African countries have ratified the AfCFTA agreement.

Sh32bn port terminal begins operations

Mombasa port is to underline its position as the gateway to East Africa as operations at the new Sh32 billion Container Terminal 2 started Tuesday following the successful docking of the first ship.

It brings an additional capacity of 450,000 containers, which will increase the port’s cargo handling volume from 1.42 million to 1.732 million.

It is part of the Mombasa Port Development Programme designed to accommodate larger vessels, giving it a competitive edge over Dar es Salaam and Djibouti ports.

The festival, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Sport and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia includes book festival, art fair, music festival, film festivals among others will remain open from June 14th – 19th 2022.

Addis Ababa, February 12/2022 /ENA/ The bilateral relation between Ethiopia and South Sudan goes beyond diplomatic niceties, the founder and chairman of the South Sudan Center for Strategic and Policy Studies (CSPS) John Gai Yoh said.

The chairman made the remark during his discussion with Ethiopian Ambassador to South Sudan, Nebil Mahdi on bilateral and regional issues, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  

The relationship between Ethiopia and South Sudan is based on mutual interest embedded with a history of friendship, according to Yoh.

North Darfur rebel movements told to remove their forces from towns

Governor of North Darfur Nimir Abdelrahman said that the third meeting of the High Council for Security Arrangements gave the leaders of the rebel movements that signed the Juba Peace Agreement seven days to move their forces from the towns to the ‘areas of support’, as stipulated in the Peace Juba Agreement.
