DEVELOPING STORY: Gov’t Inauguration Ceremony Kicks Off

An elaborate ceremony marking the formation of the new government has kicked off in Addis Abeba’s Mesqel Square.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and President Sahle-Work Zewde are among the senior government officials in attendance.
Muhammadu Buhari, president of Nigeria, Salva Kiir, president of South Sudan, and Ismail Omar Guelleh, president of Djibouti, are among the foreign dignitaries attending the event.

There are two editions of The Economiston Africa influenced by the narrative on the continent over the past two decades. Published at the turn of the century, one and rather infamous, was an all-black cover that displayed a photo of a young African carrying a bazooka superimposed over the continent. The headline read, “The Hopeless Continent.” The main theme of the issue has this opening line: “Floods in Mozambique; threats of famine in Ethiopia (again); mass murder in Uganda; the implosion of Sierra Leone; and a string of wars across the continent.”

Addis Abeba, February 24/2021 – The Ethiopia National Defense Forces (ENDF) called 15 Tigrayan members of the ENDF who were deployed with the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan and who refused to board a flight in Juba airport, “traitors backed by the UNHCR and Tigrayans working in the UN.” The ENDF also demanded an apology from the UNHCR.
