There are two editions of The Economiston Africa influenced by the narrative on the continent over the past two decades. Published at the turn of the century, one and rather infamous, was an all-black cover that displayed a photo of a young African carrying a bazooka superimposed over the continent. The headline read, “The Hopeless Continent.” The main theme of the issue has this opening line: “Floods in Mozambique; threats of famine in Ethiopia (again); mass murder in Uganda; the implosion of Sierra Leone; and a string of wars across the continent.”

Addis Abeba, February 28/2021-  In his first official statement since becoming the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken said “the immediate withdrawal of Eritrean forces and Amhara regional forces from Tigray” are essential first steps to end “reported atrocities and the overall deteriorating situation in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.”

Addis Abeba, February 08/2021 – Through a joint-statement by High-Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell, Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen and Commissioner Janez Lenarčič , issued today, the EU said it “joins the United States’ call for the withdrawal of Eritrean troops from Ethiopia, which are fueling the conflict in Tigray, reportedly committing atrocities, and exacerbating ethnic violence.”

News: 30 police officers killed, 40 more injured in latest violent clashes between federal police and Afar security forces: UNOCHA

Addis Abeba, February 02/2021 – On 23 January 2021, at least 30 police officers were killed and 40 more were injured in “violent clashes between the Federal Police and Afar security forces, and the Issa militia in Adaytu village”, the UNOCHA reported. “While initial reports indicated that up to 70 police officers were killed and some 64 wounded, authorities later confirmed 30 deaths and 40 injuries. Casualties on the Issa militia side remains unknown,” UNOCHA’s latest report said.
