Kwagala wins European Union Human Rights award 2022

A human rights lawyer and executive director of the Women’s Probono Initiative, PRIMAH KWAGALA, 34, is the 2022 winner of the European Union Human Rights Defenders’ award.

The award is given annually by the EU member states and the Embassy of Norway to recognize an outstanding contribution by a human rights defender who often works in difficult circumstances in Uganda. Yudaya Nangonzi attended the event at the residence of the ambassador of Belgium in Kololo last week.

Consortium accused of importing substandard fuel blames member firm

A group of companies accused by the NNPC of importing substandard fuel into the country has put the blame on a member of the consortium, saying the firm has long been operating independently and bears full responsibility for the purchase.

The government announced on Tuesday that it found excess methanol in stocks recently brought into the country, prompting shortage of petrol in major cities including Abuja and Lagos.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited provided the names of the firms it said were responsible for importing adulterated petrol into the country.

The government said it found methanol in recently imported fuel at levels far higher than allowed. This has led to fuel scarcity in major cities of the country, and a 10-day shortage in national fuel reserve capacity.

BUJUMBURA, Burundi, Dec 7 – A massive fire tore through an overcrowded prison in Burundi before dawn on Tuesday, killing dozens of inmates and seriously injuring many more, the country’s vice president said.

Many prisoners were still asleep when the blaze took hold in a penitentiary in Burundi’s political capital Gitega, witnesses said. Much of the facility was destroyed.

Vice President Prosper Bazombanza, who visited the scene of the tragedy with several ministers, told reporters that 38 people were killed and 69 seriously hurt.
