Arusha. The United States has pledged to support the private sector growth in East Africa and invested more than $ 40 million to the blue economy in Zanzibar.

The commitment was made by the American ambassador to Tanzania Michael A. Battle during his visit to the East African Business Council (EABC) head office in Arusha on Thursday.

The Nigerian government’s ambition of urging informal sector workers to save for retirement when they could barely earn enough to survive today, amid growing poverty and rising cost of living, is delivering a predictable outcome. Caribbean countries that live in fear of being blacklisted by the European Union should band together and take legal action, according to Barbados-based economist and Caribbean policy expert Marla Dukharan.

The Virgin Islands has been added to the European Union’s “grey list” along with nine other jurisdictions in the Caribbean and elsewhere, the EU Council announced after its meeting on Feb. 24.

Besides the VI, the EU added the Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Israel, Montserrat, Russia, Tunisia, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Vietnam, bringing the total list up to 25 jurisdictions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized Botswana for its efforts to prevent the transmission of HIV from expectant mothers to unborn children. Officials say no children born to HIV-positive mothers this year had the virus.

WHO awarded Botswana the ‘silver tier’ status this week; The silver tier certification is given to countries that have lowered the mother-to-child HIV transmission rate to under five per cent and provided prenatal care and anti-retroviral treatment to more than 90 percent of pregnant women.

INFORMATION minister, Monica Mutsvangwa has led tributes celebrating Zimbabwe Achiever Awards (ZAA) founder and chairperson, Conrad Mwanza for his achievements at the helm of the prestigious awards.

This comes after Mwanza earlier in July announced he would be stepping down as ZAA chief executive, a post he occupied since the awards inception a decade ago. His successor will be announced on December 1.
