Gongloe promises 50% women cabinet

Liberian presidential hopeful and renowned human rights lawyer Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe has promised to form his cabinet with 50 percent female ministers if he is elected president in the 2023 presidential and legislative elections.
Through a phone interview from the United States with a Liberian – based local broadcaster Radio Gbarnga on Monday, 13 June 2023, Cllr. Gongloe explained how women are unbending when they decide to be straightforward.

President George Manneh Weah has appointed Dr. Yarsuo Weh-Dorliae as chairperson of the Governance Commission (GC).

President Weah appointed Dr. Weh – Dorliae Wednesday, 15 June 2022. Weh – Dorliae is a former GC commissioner who worked under the administration of the late Dr. Amos C. Sawyer, then chairperson of the GC in former President Ellen Johnson – Sirleaf’s administration.

The House of Representatives has invited the Ministers of Health, Finance and Development Planning and authorities of the Civil Service Agency to appear before full plenary to respond to concerns of ongoing go-slow by health workers in River Gee, Grand Kru, Sinoe, Maryland and Grand Gedeh counties.

The invite followed a communication to full Plenary by River Gee County Electoral district #3 Representative Francis Saidy Dopoh.

The newly inducted Women Legislative Caucus chairperson Senator Nyonblee Karnga – Lawrence has vowed to ensure that all incumbent female lawmakers are retained following the 2023 elections.

“They must get re-elected with the support of women and our international partners,” Karnga – Lawrence said during Caucus’ induction last week. 

Speaking at the Capitol, Sen. Karnga – Lawrence said they are concluding a very aggressive retention plan that will tackle the weaknesses and challenges of incumbent female lawmakers.

Senate rejects Weah’s nominee for Maritime

The Plenary of the Liberian Senate has overwhelmingly rejected President George Manne Weah’s nominee for the post of Deputy Commissioner for International Registry, Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA). 

17 members of the Senate voted rejecting nominee Edwina Collins Thursday, 9 June 2022. Bong County Senator Prince K. Moye abstained during the vote.

The Senate’s decision was triggered by a report by its Standing Committee on Maritime, headed by Grand Bassa County Senator Jonathan L. Kaipay. Kaipay’s report had recommended Madam Collins’ rejection.
