Liberian Sara Beysolow Nyanti, currently the Resident Coordinator of the UN operations in Nepal, has been appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres as his new Deputy Special Representative in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. The triple function role, which is at the level of Assistant Secretary-General, will put Mrs. Nyanti in charge of the UN’s entire development and humanitarian programmes in South Sudan, Africa’s youngest republic.
Bayode Olawunmi-Treasures, a Nigerian Guinness Book of Record holder, has commenced another edition of the “Read Aloud contest”, which will run for 480 hours, from December 1 to December 21, 2021.
Mr Olawunmi-Treasures, the Chief Executive Officer of I Read Afrika Foundation, in a statement on Sunday, said the 2021 edition of the contest is aimed at spurring reading culture in children through building functional libraries across the federation.
Belgian Patrick Aussems was on Monday unveiled as the new AFC Leopards head coach.
He takes over from the club’s former captain Anthony Kimani who has been holding brief at the helm since the resignation of Thomas Trucha.
Kimani has since announced his resignation.
Aussems joins the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League club following a successful stint at Tanzanian giants Simba SC where he won the league title and led the team to the group stage of the Caf Champions League.
NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 8 – Kenya is among the 148 countries where more people are at risk of becoming victims of human trafficking, according to the latest report by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The increase in human trafficking is attributed to the vulnerability of victims reeling in the economic meltdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic which has brought the world almost to a halt since last year.
PROFESSOR of liver and pancreas surgery at the NWRHA Shamir Cawich said contrary to what some doctors practise and preach, liver and pancreas cancers in TT in 2021 are no longer a death sentence.
Professor Cawich, president of the Caribbean Chapter of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA). spoke to the Newsday after the first international conference hosted by TT on January 30. He said such conditions can now safely be treated in TT with a combination of surgery and chemotherapy for good survival results.
Madam Sara Beysolow Nyanti, the highest ranking Liberian in the United Nations system has been appointed UN Residence Coordinator in Nepal, with host Government’s approval. Ms. Nyanti was appointed on 6 January, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
She brings more than 20 years of experience in development and humanitarian work to the position, which she has acquired from assignments around the world with the United Nations and externally.
With many countries strategising for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) that kicked off at the beginning of this month, Dangote Industries Limited, has stated that its cement expansion plan and fertiliser investments will open new trade routes for the company and Nigeria under the trade deal.
Already, the cement company, despite an installed capacity of 29.3Mta in Nigeria, is targeting an expanded entity in-country and in Cameroon, while new plants will soon be ready for commissioning in Niger, Benin, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Togo.
