Caribbean countries that live in fear of being blacklisted by the European Union should band together and take legal action, according to Barbados-based economist and Caribbean policy expert Marla Dukharan.

“I felt like there should be some legal recourse that should be pursued collectively,” Ms. Dukharan said on Feb. 23 on the regional livestreamed show “Territories Talk,” hosted by Shaina Smith-Archer, chairwoman of the BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association.

Territory added to EU ‘grey list’

The Virgin Islands has been added to the European Union’s “grey list” along with nine other jurisdictions in the Caribbean and elsewhere, the EU Council announced after its meeting on Feb. 24.

Besides the VI, the EU added the Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Israel, Montserrat, Russia, Tunisia, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Vietnam, bringing the total list up to 25 jurisdictions.

With increasing referrals for vascular surgery coming from the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Cayman Islands, and Turks and Caicos Islands, Vein Centers of Jamaica has been creating a space for itself in the medical tourism industry and is now eyeing expansion within the Caribbean.

Vein Centers of Jamaica was founded in 2012 by American vascular surgeon Dr Bart Muhs and the Jamaican husband and wife team of Dr Hilary Brown and Javette Nixon. According to Nixon, it "started with a conversation in a car driving from Kingston to Portland".

PRESIDENT of the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Dr. Gene Leon says the price of electricity in the region is among the highest in the world.

Speaking at an Energy Forum in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the CDB President said that the cost of electricity in the region averaged US$0.28 per kilowatt hour in 2019.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Government has approved planned investment projects valued at nearly US$73 million in anticipation of an uptick in the cruise industry, Premier Washington Misick announced this week.

Carnival Lines will be investing $25 million in the Grand Turk Cruise Port with the Government providing up to $1 million in grants to eligible operators in the island capital to help them prepare for the reopening of the cruise industry.

Chukka to roll out upgrade for Barbados attraction

Chukka Caribbean Adventures, which has taken control of Harrison's Eco-Adventure Park in the parish of St Thomas in Barbados, is rolling out an upgrade of the attraction which will bring it on par with attractions elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Chukka Caribbean, which describes itself on its website as the Caribbean's largest nature-adventure tour operator, allows adventure seekers to reconnect with nature at locations in Jamaica, Belize, Turks and Caicos, the Dominican Republic, and Barbados.
