NUSOJ condemns killing of independent journalist in Puntland

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) strongly condemns the targeted and heartless killing of an independent journalist in northern Galkayo of Mudug region in central Somalia.

Freelance journalist shot dead in Puntland

A Somali freelance journalist was shot dead on Monday night by unknown gunmen in the town of Galkayo in the central Mudug region.

Local authorities have confirmed the murder of Jamal Farah Aden in the divided town and said the police have launched an investigation into the killing.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the journalist’s killing.

It marks the country’s first murder case in 2021 but comes months after an Al-Shabaab bomber killed at least 16 people outside a soccer pitch in the southern part of the city.

Somalia on Monday made the face masks mandatory after rising in COVID-19 cases amid a deadlier second wave.

Omar Mohamud Mohamed Filish, mayor of Mogadishu, the largest and most populated city in the country, announced the use of face masks in all public places mandatory amid the rising numbers of coronavirus cases and deaths.

This is the first time face masks have been made compulsory since the first case was detected in March last year in the Horn of Africa country.

More than 1,000 Uganda People’s Defense Forces – UPDF soldiers under the Reserve Forces have been recalled for deployment in Somalia.

Maj Yusuf Bilal Katamba of the UPDF First Division that superintends reserve forces says that the recalled soldiers should report to nearby barracks not later than tomorrow.

The army said the soldiers were supposed to be deployed in Somalia in April 2020, but the plans were disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Reserve forces comprise of soldiers who have been officially retired from the army.

Al-Shabaab militants dead in army operation

At least nine al-Shabaab terrorists were killed in Somalia Sunday when the al-Qaeda-affiliated terror group mounted an attack Sunday morning on an army base in the country’s southwest.

Mohamed Mukhtar, the district deputy commissioner in the town of Qasahdhere in the Bay region, told local media that the army, backed by Ethiopian forces serving under the African Union peacekeeping mission forces in the Horn of Africa country (AMISOM) killed at least nine terrorists during the attack.

Bomb blast targets local district commissioner in Mogadishu

A landmine explosion in the Somali capital targeted a local district commissioner in the second bomb blast in Mogadishu city on Sunday, police said.

The roadside mine targeted a convoy carrying Ahmed Abdullahi Ariif, the commissioner of the Yaaqshiid district, while traveling to the Darusalam village area in Mogadishu, local police officer Abdifatah Hassan told Anadolu Agency over the phone.

“As far as we know, commissioner Ariif and other officials in the convoy escaped unhurt but it is early to say how many people were killed or wounded,” he said.

An explosion heard in Somali capital

An IED blast was reported in the vicinity of the former Turkish embassy building near the KM4 junction in the Somali capital, Mogadishu on Sunday morning.

Witnesses say the explosion heard at Abdikasim Salad around 8:15 am local time and was followed by gunfire that continued for several minutes.

UN sanctions Al-Shabaab leaders

Members of the UN Security Council unanimously approved sanctions for three leaders of the Al-Shabaab terror group after the US and Somali governments forwarded them for designation.

The resolution slapped penalties on Abukar Ali Adan, Maalim Ayman, and Mahad Karate, allegedly responsible for numerous acts of terrorism in Somalia and in the region.
