Court summons Ngilu for failing to pay doctors in Kitui County

NAIROBI, Kenya Oct 7 – Employment and Labour Relations court has issued summons against Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu to appear in court for failing to honour an order to pay doctors in the county.

Justice Monica Mbaru said the Governor, the County Service Board and the Chief Executive officer for Health disobeyed a court order requiring them to pay more than 20 doctors serving the county.

They are required in court on October 14.

The doctors, through their lawyer Henry Kurauka, moved to court after missing salaries for four months.

Court hears police witness in money laundering case

The money laundering trial of Marlon Hosea Carrington got under way in the High Court this morning.

The Phillips Road, St Michael resident is facing a nine-member jury charged with engaging in a transaction involving the sum of BDS$57 000 being the proceeds of crime. Carrington pleaded not guilty before Madam Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell to the offence which is said to have occurred on December 7, 2009.

He also denied having BDS$49 941 and US$36 being the proceeds of crime on October 13, 2013.

An American visitor who disregarded two of this island’s COVID-19 directives was ordered to pay $3 000 to a local court for his “indiscretion” before being handed over to immigration.

New Yorker Leroy Osaruwense Oriakhi pleaded guilty to contravening Paragraph (18) clause (a) of the emergency Management (COVID-19) (Curfew) (No 11) Directive 2021, without reasonable explanation, while in a public place at Bush Hill without a face mask, face shield or face covering for his mouth, nose or chin.

Driver ordered to pay $12 000 for causing bartender’s death

The loss of a well-loved bartender deprived a mother of her son’s love and robbed friends of his companionship.

This was one of the remarks made today as Justice Laurie-Ann Smith Bovell sentenced Ron Rodrick Robinson, 33, of Charnocks, Christ Church.

Robinson was charged with causing the death of Adrian Goddard by driving a motorcar dangerous to the public. He pleaded guilty to the lesser count of dangerous driving. Goddard, 41, of College Savannah, St John was a bartender at Bubba’s Sports Bar and Restaurant.

$1 000 for breaching protocol

A 24-year-old fish vendor was fined a total of $1 200 for curfew and drug offences.

Jerome Antonio Stuart, of 8th Avenue New Orleans, St Michael pleaded guilty to breaching Paragraph (4) subparagraph (1) of the Emergency Management (COVID-19) (CURFEW) (NO.4) Directive by leaving his residence when he was not authorized to do so on February 24 and possession of a small quantity of marijuana.

He was fined a forthwith $1000 fine on the breach of curfew charge and $200 on the drug charge. The amounts were paid.

Alledged sweet potato thief remanded

Seven months after serving a prison sentence in connection with an offence at Carrington Estates Limited, 44-year-old Kirk Orlando Small was back at Dodds. This time he is on remand for allegedly committing an act of predial larceny at the same location.

Small, who is recorded as having no fixed place of abode, but told Magistrate Elwood Watts that he resides with his sister at Blades Hill, St Philip, is also facing a breach of curfew charge and is expected to reappear before the District ‘C’ Magistrates’ Court on March 18.
