UN, U.S. renew support for gov’t humanitarian response to Tigray

 ADDIS ABABA – The U.S. and United Nations (UN) reaffirmed continued support to Ethiopia in the efforts to respond to the     crisis in Tigray and mobilize support to the people in need of humanitarian assistance.

The U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made an introductory call to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday and discussed multiple issues, including the coronavirus pandemic, climate change, the Syrian crisis and the Ethiopian government’s efforts to rehabilitate Tigray.

Guterres and Blinken reaffirm their commitment to support Ethiopia’s efforts to respond to the crisis in Tigray, according to the state department.

In his recent phone call with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Ph.D), Blinken approved US support to the Ethiopian government efforts to fulfill emergency assistance in Tigray.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Peace announced that over 75 international humanitarian agencies have received approval from the Ethiopian government to enter and mobilize humanitarian assistance in Tigray State.

Accordingly, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) Ethiopia country office facilitates the emergency assistance delivery in coordination with the Ethiopian government.
