Minister of Trade, Commerce, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Business, and Export Development, Hon. Ian Douglas stated that he views the Dominica Agricultural Science Complex as one of the pillars of transforming Dominica’s agricultural industry. He went on to say that it also is a part of achieving the $700 million by 2030 goal set by the Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit.
He stated that this facility will be a major component of making that vision a reality. As the Parliamentary Representative for the Portsmouth constituency, Hon. Douglas revealed that he and his constituents are happy to house this complex and gave a brief agricultural history of One Mile.
“One Mile has always had a tradition of agricultural development from way back in history. We’ve had the Agricultural Station here at One Mile, and this is taking us to the next level, as far as agricultural research and development are concerned.”
The Trade Minister indicated that to achieve the $700 million by 2030 goal research and development are important, he believes that Dominica has a comparative advantage as far as agricultural development, production, and sale, with regards to the rest of the region.
“These times that we live in bring this development in sharp focus when food security comes to the fore, where the World is focusing on food security because of the geopolitical dynamics and the trade and value chains being disrupted, and logistics are being difficult right now. The entire world is focusing on food production, and the ability of governments to feed its population and people.”
Hon. Douglas says it is good to see that Dominica is one of the countries in the region and the world, is taking the lead as far as food security and feeding its population.
