ZIMBABWEANS living and working in South Africa are reported to be “worried and tense” over reports of fresh xenophobic attacks in the neighbouring country.

In a statement Wednesday, the Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF) chairperson Gabriel Shumba most foreigners in South Africa were “under siege”.

“We are of course worried and tense as many foreigners now appear under siege. Events that have taken place these last few days are extremely alarming, but fortunately, it is not the generality of South Africans that are instigating the new wave of xenophobia that we have seen in some parts of Gauteng and some areas of KwaZulu-Natal,” he said.

“It is some political opportunists and instigators, some of whom have openly stated that all foreigners ‘unless they are brain surgeons’, have to be ‘removed from communities and sent back to their countries’. We view these statements as extremely inflammatory and irresponsible.”

Shumba added: “We are anxious and concerned that as with previous xenophobic violence, the response of the law enforcement authorities will be the usual apathetic and tardy.

“We call upon the SADC and African Union institutions to protect foreign nationals’ rights as previous experience has indicated that there either is an unwillingness or inability to act sooner rather than later.”

There are an estimated three million Zimbabweans living in South Africa as political or economic refugees.

In recent days, there have been marches in South Africa against African migrants. In Soweto, Sunday, Nhlanhla Lux of Operation Dudula and his followers removed foreign traders from the Bara taxi rank. They misidentified some traders and evicted a few South African traders too. Lux is distributing a pamphlet calling for a day of action against foreigners on 22 January.

“Saturday 22 Jan 2022, all young people must print their CVs or copy of their IDs and visit restaurants to peacefully sing and demonstrate that all low skill jobs belong to South Africans,” Lux said.

On Tuesday, Patriotic Alliance combed through the Johannesburg City Council building, counting and threatening foreign-born staff. Party leader Gayton McKenzie amplified videos of young party activists shouting at council employees.

“The City of Johannesburg is full of foreigners working there whilst we have unemployed graduates sitting at home. We have instructed some of our councillors to deal with this matter. The Chief Whip has a Zimbabwean office manager,” Mckenzie said.

He has said 2022 will be the year of the campaign against migrants working in South Africa and the businesses that employ them.

Zimbabweans Put Country On World Of Wine Map

LIKE many young Zimbabweans before and since, Tinashe Nyamudoka left the economic chaos of his country to find work and a better life for himself in neighbouring South Africa.

When he left in 2008, Nyamudoka had never tasted wine. Now, he ranks among southern Africa’s top sommeliers and has his own wine label with international sales.

“We have a lot going against us as Zimbabweans, and you might think there is nothing good coming out of the country,” says the 36-year-old. “So, for me to be recognised as the [top] sommeliers in the world, being African and Zimbabwean, instils a sense of hope and pride.”

Nyamudoka began his career as a waiter in a Cape Town restaurant, where he learned about the different varieties and tastes of the wines his customers drank.

He moved on to become a hotel wine waiter, working alongside some of the city’s leading sommeliers.

After studying his trade, he won the best wine steward award in a competition for luxury hotels in the Western Cape in 2013.

His talents received international attention when, in 2017, he and three other Zimbabwean sommeliers were selected to take part in the World Blind Tasting Championship in France.

The team was the first from Zimbabwe to take part in the contest, in which competitors have to use just their palate to identify the variety of grape, country of origin, appellation, vintage and producer of the wines.

The Zimbabweans did not win – coming 23rd out of 24 teams – but their story became the subject of a documentary released last year, Blind Ambition, which Nyamudoka says brought him “a sense of pride”.

The team returned to the competition the next year and this time came 14th – beating the UK and the US teams.

His wine label, Kumusha – “home” or “roots” in Zimbabwe’s Shona language – has benefited from his celebrity, producing 200,000 bottles a year, up from 1,200 when it was launched four years ago. “People started embracing it,” he says.

“I conceptualised it [the label] around 2014,” he adds.

“Xenophobia was hitting home [in South Africa] and we were all missing kumusha.”

The eight Kumusha wines – three reds, four whites and a rosé – are all produced in South Africa. They are sold in the US, the Netherlands, Kenya and Zimbabwe – “my exciting market”, he says.

This month, he is starting to export his wines to the UK.

“I started this brand from scratch with no aid or financial handouts. It has been pure grit, passion and dedication,” he says.

“I want people to understand that you can make it without prejudice.”

But Nyamudoka says he has encountered racism on his way to the top of a white-dominated industry.

“There are instances where you get to a tasting, and it is all white [people], you kind of feel out of place. At work, you cannot get the position you want because you are black. It comes in different forms. It is not obvious, it is much more subtle,” he says.

“When I was in my last days on the floor [in a restaurant], people would recognise your talent, but they would not give you your flowers [recognition] because you are not like them. It is like you must work twice as hard to prove yourself. It is always going to be there, I suppose.”

Nyamudoka, who sits on the board of the recently established Sommeliers Association of Zimbabwe, hopes that his achievements will encourage other Zimbabweans to enter the wine industry.

“There’s been an emergence of black sommeliers in the world as the industry becomes more diverse. We see the hospitality offering in Zimbabwe improving and there will be a need for sommeliers.”

A fellow sommelier, Takura Makadzange, agrees. Also from Harare, Makdazange, 38, trained in Australia, working his way up from hotel porter to restaurant owner. Now, he is back in Zimbabwe.

“I came back home because there are plenty of opportunities. There is plenty of space in hospitality. Recently there has been more of an explosion in the food and drink sector in Zimbabwe, especially speciality wines that are being made now.

“The industry has grown, the fish industry has grown and we can have access to wildlife and game meat. Promoting the local food and beverage industry is a no-brainer. We have something that no one else does. National pride is important, but also we have beautiful products,” he says.

Makadzange qualified for last month’s Ubuntu Sommelier Trophy in South Africa but had to withdraw when he caught Covid-19.

“There are instances where a less-qualified white person is trusted with looking after the wine list over any person of colour, but you have to keep moving,” he says.

“It is very unusual for a Zimbabwean to do well in this field. We want to continue that trajectory.

“I think it’s time we have more women sommeliers from Zimbabwe so, hopefully, I will train someone to get to the standard of competing.”

Govt Leads Tributes As Mwanza Bids Farewell To ZAA

INFORMATION minister, Monica Mutsvangwa has led tributes celebrating Zimbabwe Achiever Awards (ZAA) founder and chairperson, Conrad Mwanza for his achievements at the helm of the prestigious awards.

This comes after Mwanza earlier in July announced he would be stepping down as ZAA chief executive, a post he occupied since the awards inception a decade ago. His successor will be announced on December 1.

In 2010 he founded the ZAA in the United Kingdom which celebrates Zimbabweans across the world with outstanding achievements in the arts, business, innovation, sport and community.

In a speech, Mutsvangwa extended gratitude to Mwanza for coming up with the noble idea to recognise outstanding Zimbabweans abroad.

She said: “The ZAA is a befitting platform to celebrate the achievements of Zimbabweans who are known for their remarkable work ethics and warm demeanor. I would like to thank Conrad and team for a remarkable concept and excited to see it now in full fruition.”

Executive chair of the Higher Life Foundation, Tsitsi Masiyiwa applauded Mwanza for expanding the ZAA brand to countries like the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Botswana, South Africa and China.

“Throughout your tenure, ZAA has grown and found a home all around the world. Your great work in celebrating the Zimbabwean diaspora is commendable. We appreciate you for all you have done,” she said.

Zimbabwean ambassador to the United Kindgom, Christian Katsande said the ZAA has played a huge role in the country’s re-engagement drive.

“The bringing to the fore of important digital technology has broadened the scope of our initiatives to re-engage the world and ZAA has been a key part of uniting that community,” he said.

Another diplomat, David Hamadziripi added: “I would like to commend Mr Mwanza for creating lasting linkages between Zimbabweans and various influential players from around the world through the ZAA.

“He is a hard-worker and a patriot who has used a model to recognize the capabilities of Zimbabweans and inspire many to use the best of their talents and gifts.”

Mwanza was recently bestowed with a surprise special recognition award for his work at the ZAA by the Elite Circle Group.

EMPLOYERS Confederation of Zimbabwe (EMCOZ) has hailed the government for implementing reforms that have significantly reduced annual inflationary rates amid calls to further tighten the policy measures for fuller benefits to cascade down to workers.

Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com on the possibility of matching salaries with current inflationary rates, EMCOZ president Demos Mbauya hinted there was a need to consider the current impact of economic policies and address existing gaps through constructive social dialogue.

“Clearly, the economy is hovering on a recovery trajectory. Since the opening of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) foreign currency auction, annual inflation has dropped significantly, from 785,5% in May 2020 to as low as 54,5% in October 2021,” he said.

“As employers, we acknowledge the mismatch between salaries and the Total Consumption Poverty Lines (TCPL). Employers continue to be committed to adjusting salaries in order to cushion the workers from the unbearable inflationary pressures.”

Mbauya, however, called on authorities to exhaust all channels possible to plug residual issues causing inflationary pressures.

“We believe that excessive local currency money supply growth; large payments to farmers in respect of the maize bumper harvest; payments to government contractors as investment in infrastructure intensifies.

“The RBZ foreign currency auction system also needs to be improved and enable it to operate as a proper Dutch Auction System,” he said.

He added there was a need to engage in social dialogue and come up with a feasible strategy of collectivism in proffering lasting solutions bedeviling the economy.

TOP economist, Vince Musewe has vehemently dismissed expectations workers bodies for US$ salary payments hinting such a move would be inconsistent with international best practices and instead called salary adjustments in tandem with inflationary pressures.

Several workers bodies were highly anticipating a return to the US dollar denominated salary in the national budget delivered by Finance Minister, Mthuli Ncube recently, prompting many to shoot down the blueprint for failing to award salaries in foreign currency.

But speaking exclusively to NewZimbabwe.com Business, Musewe instead hailed commitments by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) which were also confirmed in the blueprint, saying such initiatives will navigate the economy through the current hardships.

He buttressed that priority must be placed on managing inflation and having a stable foreign exchange rate with the US dollar.

“He (Ncube) mentioned that the auction is going to be fine-tuned so that we create a stable environment and macro-economic stability. To me, that’s the direction we need to move in but obviously implementing these ideas maybe a different issue all together,” said Musewe.

The seasoned economist maintained that “every economy must have its own local currency”, highlighting that there should be no debate about that.

He said the task before the nation, is about how to create confidence in our own local currency, which he said requires all systems to rein in volatility triggers.

He said it is important to appreciate the fact that the main sources of foreign currency are companies which have strong exports.

“We can’t all be jumping to take their money. Currently individuals are already receiving their money from the diaspora and the minister mentioned that it is US$1, 5 billion per annum that is coming directly to households and has nothing to do with government.

“So we have to be careful in demanding the US$ because my question is. Where will that money come from?” quizzed Musewe.

To find the lasting solution, he however called on authorities to increase wages salaries in line with inflationary pressures saying this will solve issues being raised by teachers, civil servants and workers in general once and for all.

BNC Exchange Losses Down 96% Due To Stable Rates

LIISTED resources group, Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) has seen net exchange losses going down by 96% attributed to the positive impact of stable rates.

Presenting the interim condensed financial results for the period ended September 31, 2021, BNC chairperson, Muchadeyi Masunda applauded the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) foreign exchange auction for the obtaining stability.

“Net exchange loss for the period amounted to US$67,467 and was 96% lower than the US$1,5 million for the same period last year due to a more stable auction exchange rate during the half-year period under review,” he said.

Foreign exchange gains or losses occur when a company buys and or sells goods and services in a foreign currency, and that currency fluctuates relative to their home currency.

During the period under review, profit from operating activities of US$6,2 million was achieved, compared to US$4,7 million in the first half of last year, registering an increase of 31%.

Profit and total comprehensive income for the period was US$5,8 million, compared to US$3,4 million for the same period last year, reflecting the positive impact of improved nickel prices.

Profit after tax of US$5,8 million, 70% higher than for the same period last year with equipment replacement and upgrade program continued with US$4,7 million capital expenditure amid a resolution to migrate the Company’s listing to the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange

However, the Nickel Miner saw administrative costs for the period at US$3,3 million being 120% higher than the US$1,6 million for the prior period mainly due to the following an increase in wages and salaries as referred to above, increase in Intermediated Money Transfer Tax and bank charges alongside Shangani Mine care and maintenance costs.

Tobacco Output Volumes Surge 13 %

ZIMBABWE has recorded an 13% increase in tobacco output volumes since the commencement of the selling season in April, according to a report by the Tobacco Sales Limited (TSL) has reported.

Presenting a trading update for the third quarter ended July 31 2021, TSL company secretary James Muchando said both tobacco quantity and prices registered an upward trend attributable to a good rainy season.

“National tobacco volumes of 200 million kgs as of July 31 2021 are 13% above prior year, whilst the tobacco national average price at US$ 2,78 per kg is 11 % ahead of prior year. A good rainfall season has ensured that output of other agricultural commodities is likely to be well ahead of the previous season,” he said.

Tobacco Sales Floor handled 16, 7 million kgs of tobacco in the quarter against 6,9 million kgs handled in the comparative period, an increase of 143%. Of this volume, 60% was on behalf of tobacco contractors in Harare and the new decentralised floors in Karoi and Marondera in line with the group’s strategic thrust.

The group also achieved good volume growth across most business units and remains profitable. Revenue is ahead of prior year, for the quarter, by 9%.

“Adequate interest cover on borrowings is maintained with most working capital requirements funded from internally generated resources. The developments in the marketplace from May 2021 have increased pressures on margins and may adversely affect efforts to preserve value,” he said.

Across other tobacco related operations, Agricura achieved strong volume growth across most product lines due to increased market share, stock availability and attractive pricing particularly on locally manufactured products.

On farming operations, the above-normal rainfall season resulted in good yields for the maize, Seed maize and soya bean crops.

Bak Logistics recorded good volume growth over the prior year in tobacco handling 28 %, distribution 36% , ports 285 % and transport 117 % divisions attributable to new clients being signed up and the commencement of transport services from decentralised tobacco floors.

“The group continues to pursue its “moving agriculture” strategy in a difficult operating environment and to invest accordingly to create and preserve shareholder value. The availability of foreign currency and appropriately priced financing will assist in taking advantage of the existing growth opportunities,” added Muchando.

THE Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) has bemoaned the country’s huge debt impact on overall industrial productivity amid calls for authorities to implement measures that will result in reduction of the debt crisis.

Speaking to delegates at the ongoing three days long Zimbabwe Annual Multi- Stakeholder Debt Conference in Harare, CZI chief economist Cornelius Dube said evidence shows a strong correlation between good debt management and productivity.

“Data indicates that between 1980 and 1998 when the government spent around 20 % of total revenue on debt servicing, the local industry performed very well in all spheres.

“On the reverse beyond 1998 and post the Government of National Unity era when the country endured a huge debt with reduced debt serving, the local manufacturing productivity drastically went down,” he said.

The remarks come against a background where the Southern Africa nation is saddled with a local debt of $20 billion and an external debt of over US$8 billion.

However, market watchers have since slammed unjust economic policies for unfairly reducing the local debt due to local currency devaluation.

“Debt can choke industry performance especially in a situation where the government cannot access funding from global financiers and in the process being left with only one choice of resorting to local sources.

“This in the process crowds out local companies and this still takes a toll on industrial productivity. It also becomes difficult to boost local demand,” he said.

Going forward , Dube urged the government to borrow for expansion reasons and enactment of mechanisms which creates related repayment capacity for the debts, create capacity to resolve current debt and seek national cohesion on new debt in future.

Speaking at the same event, top economist, Persistence Gwanyanya said fiscal responsibility as the only way towards debt resolution.

Bankers Association of Zimbabwe chief executive officer, Fanwell Mutongo said the country’s indebtedness has also affected local banks capacity to borrow beyond the borders.

“As a result we are unable to fund meaningful projects and much of our loans are in the short to medium term against the market demand which currently has an appetite for long term financing,” he said.

AFRODAD Bemoans Zim’s Debt Distress Levels

AFRICAN Forum and Network on Debt and Development (AFRODAD) has bemoaned Zimbabwe’s debt distress levels amid calls for stakeholders in similar situations to assist in finding the best to solve the crisis.

Addressing delegates at the close of a three-day-long Zimbabwe Annual Multi-Stakeholder Debt Conference AFRODAD’s acting director, Yungong Theophilus Jong said the problem is bedeviling the southern African nation.

“Zimbabwe is one of those countries which are in debt distress and it’s a very concerning issue both for AFRODAD and civil society and ordinary citizens in such countries. Such conferences are opportunities for us to share our experiences on how we can better manage a situation like the current one,” he said.

Jong said the conference coincided with several proposals from the G20, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank on how to deal with the debt crisis.

“The problem of debt distress is that it affects development and we end up with citizens who fail to achieve their full aspirations as human beings.

“Dealing with this question of debt crisis and debt distress is an important issue and calls for the need to consider how Zimbabwe as an African country already in debt distress can come out of that situation,” he said.

In economic terms, debt distress is a situation where an entity is embroiled in unsustainable debt that can lead to debt distress with a country being unable to fulfill its financial obligations.

Such defaults can cause borrowing countries to lose market access and suffer higher borrowing costs, in addition to harming growth and investment.

Zimbabwe is currently saddled with a total of US$8.2 billion external debt and a whopping US$20 billion local debt. Owing to a difficult economic situation, the country does not have any clear strategy on how it intends to offset the debt.

Also addressing the conference, Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (ZIMCODD) director Janet Zhou called on authorities to put in place measures which enhance transparency and accountability in order to avoid future debt distress.

“That will go a long way to leverage on the youth dividend that we have by making investments for industrialisation, for startup businesses and which can grow and lift our youths who are 67% of the population from the extreme poverty that they are in,” she said.

THE Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) has called on the government to ensure that there is policy consistency and also the creation of a conducive business environment.

ZNCC president Tinashe Manzungu making an address in Kwekwe recently said the country has the potential to flourish and attract investment if there are proper government policies in place.

He explained that in place of consistent policies the current revised indigenisation and economic empowerment programme being rolled out by the governing Zanu PF party will flourish if policies are consistent.

“The backbone of the economy is in the private sector. The policies that have been brought before us the revised indigenisation economic empowerment policy is what we require as people in the private sector,” he said.

Manzungu said the corporate world in the country is ready to roll.

“What it means is that once the environment has been set straight we are ready to swim, we are ready to move and we are ready to do business.”

He said Zimbabwe can be a competitive country if there are proper policies in place.

“For us Zimbabwe to be competitive we need proper policies. We need the government and the party to work-hand-in-glove.”

Manzungu warned that in the absence of consistent policies the country will not compete on the global market.

“If that is not going to happen we are going to see Zimbabwe in all the African states being the last country in the ease of doing business,” he said.
