The number of talented Kiwi sporting kids heading to the United States on college scholarships is growing by the year, and Southland provides some glowing examples. Logan Savory reports.

Atipa Mabonga’s parents signed her up for almost any sport available as a kid.

It wasn’t so much about the sport itself, there were other reasons.

Close to 20 years ago the Mabonga family moved from Zimbabwe to New Zealand for a new life.

Atipa was four at the time.

First stop was Opunake, Taranaki, then Riversdale, Southland before eventually finding their home across the province in Otautau.

Mabonga was about eight when she joined up with athletics in Southland.

She was part of the little Otautau Athletics Club in western Southland.

“Mum and Dad signed us up because the best way to learn a new culture is through sport and through the food.

“Sport was such a great way to meet people.”

At that stage, athletics was more about seeing New Zealand than the world.

“It was such a great way to travel. Me and my brother competed at all of the Colgate Games, literally from when I was five until I was about 12.

“I never had any pressure from my parents to perform. It really was for the love of it.”

But sometimes in amongst the joy of sport emerges an obvious talent.

Through Mabonga’s time at Central Southland College she established herself as one of the country’s more talented young jumpers. She excelled, particularly in the triple jump.

During that evolution as a promising athlete, Mabonga trained alongside another star Southland triple jumper, Greer Alsop, under the tutelage of Lance Smith.

Alsop ended up making the move to the United States in 2014 on a college scholarship. She attended Washington State University.

Yet another Southland triple-jumper Charlotte Muschamp also attended Washington State University, while runner Jordan Rackham went to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Before that, runner Christina Taylor had headed to the University of Denton in Texas.

It prompted a lot of intrigue for Mabonga.

“I thought, ‘oh my goodness, what is this? This is like a whole other world’,” she recalls about the thought of living, studying and competing in the US.

By Year 12 at Central Southland College, the thought started to become serious for Mabonga. The offers started to roll in from colleges.

Eventually, the kid from Otautau signed with the Southern Methodist University [SMU].

Mabonga says she would be lying if she said she was not nervous when she put pen to paper and committed to head to live in Dallas, Texas in 2017.

“I remember Mum saying, you can give it a year and if you hate it you can come back home.”

“My mum and dad had made the massive leap to move from Zimbabwe to New Zealand, so I thought, ‘if they can do it, and establish a successful life here, I can do it’.”

Five years on and the now 23-year-old describes the opportunity as life-changing. She is living the American dream and hasn’t looked back.

She established herself as a popular member of the [SMU] track and field team.

In 2018, she was named MVP of the SMU field team and won an academic award as part of the team.

In 2020 Mabonga won the Jerry LeVias Outstanding Athlete Award which is designed to honor an African American student-athlete who exemplifies excellence on and off the field.

But her impact during her four years at SMU extended beyond that. She’s grabbed any opportunity available and developed into a leader. There’s proof of that.

In 2020, she co-founded the Black Student Athlete Committee [BSAC] at SMU.

She says it is largely about making sure people of colour are being heard and providing support where needed.

Despite finishing up at SMU in 2021 Mabonga remains a trustee on the BSAC. She is proud of the work it does.

Mabonga is now employed by the Kansas City Chiefs NFL organisation in a sought-after role.

She joined the organisation last year in a seasonal position as a social media assistant for the NFL Giant.

However, the Chiefs moved to offer a fulltime position as its influencer and culture coordinator.

It’s a wide-ranging role, but in short, she works to help build the players’ and team’s brand, not just in the US but globally.

“It’s an honour to be trusted with such a big part of the Chiefs brand at a young age and so early in my career.”

For the moment she has opted to put her own sporting quests on hold, instead opting to give her body a break.

Mabonga headed to the US with sport the centre of her attention but has gained much more from the scholarship opportunity.

Mabonga will forever be grateful where sport has led her in life.

“It definitely has been one of the most impactful things I’ve ever done. I would do it all again,” she says about the US college experience.

“It’s a lot of work, and it’s not easy. It’s a fulltime commitment, mind, body and soul.

“But for me, I grew so much as an athlete, but also so much as a person. I’m just forever grateful for the coaches that recruited me.

“SMU will always be special to me because it’s where I think I flourished into who I am today.”

Dominica is set to host the West Indies vs Bangladesh T20 I Cricket on July 2nd and 3rd at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium, where the International Cricket will make a return for the first time since May 2017. The full schedule for both games is now confirmed with both matches featuring Bangladesh vs West Indies. Dominica has hosted four international cricket matches at the WPSS, the first ODI West Indies vs Bangladesh in July 2009, followed by a second ODI, West Indies vs South Africa in May 2010, the first T20 I West Indies vs New Zealand in July 2014 and the last being a Test Match, West Indies vs Pakistan from May 10-14, 2017.

Director of Tourism, Colin Piper stated that, “The Discover Dominica Authority would like to express its gratitude to Cricket West Indies and the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica for their efforts and assistance in bringing international cricket back to Dominica after a five-year absence. We are convinced that the two T20I matches in Dominica on July 2nd and 3rd will be fantastic, and we expect a strong turnout of local, regional, and international cricket fans to enjoy the fixtures.”

Cricket West Indies, Events Management Executive, Ms. Joneé Charles said “The return of T20I games to Dominica is fantastic. We are delighted that Dominica has been chosen to host these two matches, and we hope to host more in the future. After a challenging two years owing to the pandemic, we must express our gratitude to the local organizing committee and Cricket West Indies for staging these T20I matches.”

In the following days, a full announcement on entry protocols and ticketing information for the Windsor Park Sports Stadium experience will be made. In the interim, cricket fans and patrons can expect a “Carnival-like” atmosphere with various local Dominican cultural presentations and an “after party” experience.

North Sound – West Indies won the toss and decided to field against Bangladesh on the first day of the first Test on Thursday at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua.

West Indies have included uncapped Guyanese leg-spinner Gudakesh Motie for his debut, making him the 328th player to wear the maroon cap.

Long-serving pacer Kemar Roach has also been named in the final 11 after he recovered from a hamstring injury he got when playing for Surrey in the English County Championship this past April and passed a fitness test on the eve of the match.

"There is as much strategy and positioning in fashion as there is in other industries. The approach [though] might be different," explains jewellery designer Symone Currie in-between showing Style Observer (SO) her impressive jewellery collection. It's hardly a back-handed comment. But you'd excuse the scepticism...

Currie, who has both a Bachelor's in Architectural Engineering and Master's in Engineering Management, was in pre-development planning and permitting, design and construction for varying scales and types of developement for the likes of MIT Investment Management Company (MITIMCo), Boston University, Thayer Lodging, RockPoint Group, PanJam, and Sygnus Capital.

She'd also completed projects in China, London, Boston, and New Zealand. Her time spent in each place, exploring different cultures and projects directly impacted her sense of style and creativity in different ways; but for a Jamaican woman schooled in the traditional manner to give it all up to make jewellery!

There's a broad smile and chuckle as she continues. "My decision to switch gears and join the world of fashion was almost inevitable. I am truly a creative at heart and coupled with my corporate and technical background, the transition was seamless as I was able to apply skills of strategy and positioning to this new creative endeavour."

Metal X Wire is the new project; a jewellery line that specialises in upscale pieces made of pure metals and authentic materials. The price point reflects the quality of each piece.

"From conception to design to manufacturing, it is a lengthy process that my team and I are deeply involved in. The choice of gold-plated versus vermeil versus sterling silver is considered for each and every piece. For example, our Forgotten Collection offers medallions - each representing a different motif and powerful mantra - that we tend to offer in gold plate to allow for a more accessible price point since the message is more important than exclusivity."

Her educational backgound has put her in good stead but it's not been smooth sailing.

"It has not been easy creating an e-commerce business while based in Jamaica," she continues. "Right now there is a digital divide between Jamaica and the rest of the world. Jamaica definitely has the talent but there is little infrastructure readily and easily available to Jamaican-based e-commerce stores to allow them to be competitive on the global market. The rise in MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) participating in e-commerce has sky-rocketed since the pandemic and is now the norm." Speaking particularly about Jamaica, and of her own experience, Currie adds, "The barrier to entry to existing payment providers is high, gruelling and expensive to integrate. To accept payments from a Shopify or WooCommerce, your payment portal has to be integrated through your bank. Comparatively, first world countries have easy access to Shopify, Stripe, WooCommerce and require only "three-clicks" to set up from the comfort of one's home with a low monthly cost.

"It is hard to encourage local individuals to be entrepreneurs and to compete globally when the local infrastructure for MSMEs is difficult to navigate."

She has not, however, thrown her hands up in the air in desperation. In fact, buoyed by the attention of publications like Elle and POPSUGAR [Metal X was featured in both last year] she's launched another, notably, the Legacy Line, launched virtually on January 27, is inspired by an heirloom gold bangle that was given to her as a child.

"It reminisces on the West Indian cultural practice of gifting sterling silver and gold bangles to newborns as a sign of promise and prosperity for the new generation," she adds. The collection boasts three signature pieces: Legacy Earrings, Legacy Bangle and Legacy Ring, all available in 14k solid gold or 925 sterling silver and is deemed by Currie to be her most cohesive collection yet, with regard to design; each Legacy piece embodies a sophisticated timelessness that can be passed between generations as heirlooms.

"My ambition," she concludes, "is to continually inspire my community with pieces dedicated to telling their stories by bringing the culture of 'out of many, one people' to the world. Metal X Wire's high-quality jewellery is designed to allow the wearer to select pieces that represent their stories in the now, and pass them on to the future."

SO looks forward to more creatives amplifying their concerns and together seeking solutions.

Night Nurse goes silver

NIGHT Nurse, the 1982 album by the late singer Gregory Isaacs, has been certified silver in the United Kingdom by the British Phonographic Industry for sales exceeding 60,000 copies.

The announcement made was last Friday.

June Isaacs is Gregory's widow and founder/director of The Gregory Isaacs Foundation.

"This certification for Gregory's album is an indication that people are still listening to and enjoying his music. His music was relevant then and now, and a new generation of fans are recognising his work," Isaacs told the Jamaica Observer.

She continued, "I felt very happy when I got the news about the album. I shared the good news with his family and the members of the foundation."

Night Nurse was recorded at the famed Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston. The set features songs including the popular title track Stranger in Town, Cool Down the Place, Material Man, and Sad to Know (You're Leaving).

Night Nurse was produced by Errol "Flabba" Holt, who played bass guitar on the project. Errol Brown is credited as engineer, Lincoln "Style" Scott on drums, Wycliffe "Steelie" Johnson on keyboards, Dwight Pinkney (lead guitar), and Eric "Bingy Bunny" Lamont on rhythm guitar.

Released by Island Records, Night Nurse peaked at 32 on the UK Albums chart. The title track, which enjoyed significant radio and club play in the United Kingdom, failed to chart. However, six years later in 1988, Isaacs charted at 97 on the United Kingdom Top 100 Singles chart with Rumours.

A cover of Night Nurse by Sly and Robbie featuring British group Simply Red peaked at 13 on the UK chart in September 1997; 44 in New Zealand; and, 84 in Germany. The success of song helped Sly and Robbie's Friends album (Elektra Records) nab the Grammy Award in 1999 for Best Reggae Album.

According to Isaacs, her late husband had put a lot into the Night Nurse album.

"He spent a lot of time working on the album. It was his first for Island Records and it was the album that he had the most fun doing. He also toured everywhere, mostly in Europe, to promote the album after it was released," said Isaacs.

"I met Gregory during my final year attending Shortwood Teachers' College and we got married in 1983," she continued.

Gregory Isaacs, who was once signed to Virgin Records subsidiary Front Line Records, is known for hit songs including Love is Overdue, Mr Brown, and All I Have Is Love, died from lung cancer on October 25, 2010. He was 59 years old.

In 2016, he was posthumously awarded the Order of Distinction (Officer Class) in recognition of his contribution to Jamaican music.

A cover for all ages

Today, the Jamaica Observer's Entertainment Desk begins a 30-part feature titled Cover Me Good. It will look at songs covered by Jamaican artistes which became hits.

NO history of Jamaican popular music is complete without the inclusion of the 1964 smash hit My Boy Lollipop by Millie Small, and the impact it had in taking the music to international ears.

However, a lesser known fact is that the ska-flavoured song is a cover.

My Boy Lollipop is a cover of My Girl Lollipop, originally written by Robert Spencer of the doo-wop group The Cadillacs, and credited to Spencer, Morris Levy, and Johnny Roberts. It was first recorded in New York in 1956 by Barbie Gaye.

It was Island Records head honcho Chris Blackwell who first heard Gaye's version and decided to record Small, who was then a teenager, but not before changing the title, and with the help of music great Ernie Ranglin, arranging the track to the increasingly popular ska beat.

In a previous interview, Blackwell said he had purchased the original record in 1959 and found it in his archives in 1963 and decided to do a remake.

"I would go to New York now and again and buy records and sell them to the sound system guys in Jamaica. One of these records was the original version of My Boy Lollipop. But I'd make a copy of each one on a reel-to-reel tape, it was before cassettes, and when I brought Millie over to England, I sat down trying to work out if we can find a song for her. I found this tape which had the original version of My Boy Lollipop and I said, 'That's the song we should do,' so it was really, really lucky that I found the tape," Blackwell was quoted as saying.

Millie Small's version of My Boy Lollipop is considered the first commercially successful international ska song, and has sold over six million records worldwide. Back in 1964, the hit song also enjoyed chart success reaching the number two position on the UK singles, US Billboard Hot 100, as well as in New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. It was number five in Germany and hit the top spot on the charts in Ireland.

Millie Small, who died in London in May of 2020 at age 74, and My Boy Lollipop are also credited with introducing British broadcaster and Jamaican music lover David Rodigan to the sounds of the island.

As a teenager, Rodigan recalled being transfixed my Small and her performance of My Boy Lollipop on a popular British television show.

"It was just so exciting...this unique vocal, the style of singing she had. She appeared on Ready, Steady, Go which was the number one TV show and she was just so energetic. She had this wonderful aura and the backbeat was so exciting. I'd never heard anything like this before. This was 1964 and I was not aware of ska music, so it was really my introduction to Jamaican music and the song was just so catchy, so infectious," he shared in an interview with the Jamaica Observer from his home in London.

Like so many, Rodigan too was unaware that this track with its catchy lines and new but infectious beat was a cover version.

"I had no idea. I thought it was an original al recording and it was only many years later that I discovered it was a cover. I think Barbie Gaye's version is obviously a good record too, but Millie's is the better version," he said.

For Rodigan, the key to a successful cover version of a song is to make it unique by injecting passion and depth.

"You almost have to ignore the original and try and recreate something which is unique. I remember a member of the Chin family from Randy's saying when they did cover versions, they did not encourage artistes to listen to the original. Of course, Jamaican music is famous for doing covers, but make a song special in its own way," he added.

"The best example for me was an incredible version of a song that was an international number one, Bridge Over Troubled Water [by] Simon and Garfunkel. The Jimmy London version is absolutely incredible. You wouldn't think you could get a better version than the original, but I have to say the Jimmy London version is truly inspiring and really moving. I feel the same way about David Gates and Bread with Everything I Own. I think the Ken Boothe version is, with all due respect to the original, a superior version. I think it's magical," Rodigan added.

WHEN the third season of CBS reality competition series Tough as Nails premieres on Wednesday at 7:00 pm local time, among its cast members is someone with Jamaican roots.

Kalimba Cobb Edwards, born in the United States to a Jamaican father, is among 12 competitors vying for a cash prize of US$200,000.

Married to a Jamaican, she is a fire captain with the Minneapolis Fire Department and the mother of two children.

"My dad is Jamaican and we have a lot of family in Jamaica still. Also, my son's father lives in Jamaica and we still co-parent, travelling back and forth all the time," she told the Jamaica Observer.

Cobb Edwards is the cousin of musician Phillip McFarlane from the reggae group Earth Kry. Her family hails from the parish of St Mary. She and her husband own a home in Richmond, St Ann, where they spend between four to six months of each year.

"Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we spent at least four to six months of the year in Jamaica. It's been a challenge to make that happen over the last year and half. We miss it so much," she said.

She said participating in the reality series came with its challenges.

"Well, I was gone for almost six weeks but luckily, I have a good support system to help me out," she revealed.

According to CBS, the Tough as Nails competition sees individuals, in physically demanding jobss compete against each other in a series of challenges that test their strength, endurance and mental toughness.

The series is from Emmy Award-winning New Zealand-born producer Phil Keoghan and his producing partner, Louise Keoghan. It is produced by Raquel Productions Inc in association with Tough House Productions Inc. Phil Keoghan, Louise Keoghan and Anthony Carbone are also credited as executive producers.

" Tough as Nails is a competition show with blue-collar, hard-working people doing different challenges for a grand prize. Jamaican viewers can expect some good competition between real folks. A lot of the challenges that we perform, Jamaicans do daily and there's a large population that would do extremely well on Tough as Nails. Also, we have some genuine people on the show that I know 'yardies' will relate to," said Cobb Edwards.

Yardies is a term used to describe Jamaicans at home and abroad.

Cobb Edwards explained why she decided to compete in the reality series.

"I'm doing it for my boys Ty and Mekhi, my mom, and also for myself and every little girl that grew up thinking that they weren't enough," she said.

"Winning this money would mean I could help my mom so she can retire. After 40 years of running her own day care, I would like to see her enjoy life and maybe have someone taking care of her for a little while," she added.

Iceland falls short of female-majority parliament

ICELAND, THE volcanic- ridden island in the North Atlantic ocean, has just missed out on becoming the first country in Europe to have a female majority in its Parliament.

In recent elections held there last week, 30 of the 63 seats were won by women, making Iceland Europe’s leader in female parliamentary representation with a percentage of 47.6%, just ahead of Sweden’s 47%.

Iceland has long been a leader in gender-equality and was ranked by the World Economic Forum in March of this year as “the most gender-equal nation” in the world, for the 12th year running. It has policies on equal parental leave for men and women, dating back as far as 1961 and is the first country to have elected a female Head of State in 1980.

Globally, four countries have parliaments with a female majority. The East African country of Rwanda leads the way, with 61% of its membership being female. It is followed by Cuba with 53.4%, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates jointly (50%) and New Zealand agonisingly just short with 49.3%. There is some discrepancy in the statistics for Nicaragua, some sources stating 50 % while others quote 47%.

Caribbean countries show increasing progress in their ranking for female parliamentary representation. Grenada ranks eighth with 46.7%, Guyana 38th (35.7%) followed by Dominica in 41st place. Interestingly Dominica ranks above the United Kingdom , in 42nd place, while those other supposed “bastions” of parliamentary democracy, Canada (in 58th place with 29.6% representation and the USA with 27.6% representation giving it a 70th place ranking) are not so well-ranked as one may have supposed.

St Vincent and the Grenadines is ranked in 124th place with its parliamentary representation being given as 18.2%. It can pride itself in having women occupying both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker’s positions in parliament.

Lamin Kamara was yesterday remanded at the Male Correctional Center after he appeared before magistrate Iasta Sellu Tucker of Pademba Road court No.4 in Freetown on one count charge of obtaining Le17 million by false pretenses.

Police alleges that on diverse dates between the 1st November, 2020 and 30th November, 2020 at 15 Upper Brook Street, western Area in Freetown, with intent to defraud, obtained certain property to wit seventeen million Leones.

Second prosecution witness, Yusif Kamara, a student, told the court in his testimony that he recognised the complainant as the mother of his friend, and the accused on the day the complainant went to his (the accused) house to make part payment for the purpose of travelling to New Zealand.

The witness said he recalled on the said date when the complainant asked him to go with her to the house of the accused person at Upper Brook Street in Freetown.

He said the accused directed them to his wife where they made first payment of ten million Leones and later seven million Leones.

He said the accused person later confirmed to them that he has received the said money

The witness said the purpose of the transaction was for the accused person to arrange a program for the son of the complainant to travel to New Zealand, but they later noticed that it was fake, thus they decided to enter a report at the central police station.

Meanwhile, lawyer W.C Oluba representing the accused person renewed his application for bail, but it was declined.

The matter will come up again on 30th July 2021.
