Loin des strass et des paillettes, auxquels sa progéniture est également habituée, Angelina Jolie insiste mener une vie de famille comme les autres. Au programme de ce confinement, donc : "beaucoup de pop-corn" et une multitude de goûters dont le clan profite en pyjamas. "Nous sommes tous là. Donc, tous les six enfants, mon fils aîné est rentré de Corée", glisse-t-elle. Retour qui lui a certainement fait le plus grand bien, elle qui peinait à se séparer de Maddox, parti étudier à Séoul. Désordonné mais familial, le confinement d'Angelina Jolie se déroule tout de même sur fond de divorce. Car, depuis 2016, la star de Maléfique et Brad Pitt sont en pleine dispute juridique, bien que leurs rapports soient désormais apaisés à en croire les nombreux rendez-vous des anciens tourtereaux. "Brad et Angelina veulent que leurs enfants soient en bonne santé et heureux et qu'ils bénéficient du soutien de leurs deux parents", racontait une source proche de l'ex-couple au site Entertainment Weekly, "Il a fallu des années pour guérir et ils sont enfin à une période où ils peuvent être des co-parents d'une manière vraiment saine." L'acteur américain Gregg Daniel a bien failli, au plus fort de la pandémie, ne pas se présenter à une audition à Los Angeles, où les tournages de films reprennent au ralenti entre revendications syndicales et problèmes d'assurances. "Je suis Afro-Américain, j'ai plus de 50 ans et les personnes noires mourraient de façon disproportionnée du Covid-19", dit-il pour justifier ses "hésitations". Mais "le script était tellement bon" et sa passion pour le métier si ardente que le révérend Daniels de la série "True Blood" a finalement décidé, malgré les risques, de passer le casting, à une époque où "personne ne tournait". Quelques mois ont passé depuis, la situation sanitaire s'est temporairement améliorée et le tournage de "7th & Union", film dramatique dans l'univers de la boxe, a pu être mené à bien dans les rues étrangement vides de la capitale américaine du cinéma. "Tout s'est bien passé", assure la productrice exécutive Jolene Rodriguez, à la faveur de quelques aménagements: tests de dépistage réguliers, stations de désinfection, distanciation physique obligatoire entre les prises et personnel spécialement chargé de faire respecter les gestes barrière sur les plateaux. Une poignée de tournages seulement ont pourtant repris à Hollywood depuis que le gouverneur de Californie Gavin Newsom y a donné son feu vert en juin. Avec 600.000 cas recensés et plus de 10.000 morts à lui seul, l'Etat le plus peuplé du pays est aussi le plus touché par la pandémie de Covid-19, dont la résurgence au début de l'été sur la côte pacifique a poussé certains producteurs à se tourner vers d'autres régions, plus sûres. Jolene Rodriguez reconnaît que la question s'est posée pour le film "7th & Union": "Nous nous sommes demandés à un moment s'il ne valait mieux pas arrêter pour le bien de tous. Mais nous avons finalement réussi à aller au bout". Les demandes d'autorisations de tournage plafonnent actuellement à un tiers de leur niveau habituel, selon l'organisme à but non lucratif FilmLA, et la grande majorité d'entre elles concernent la publicité et les émissions de téléréalité. La reprise des tournages de films se heurte elle aux discussions entre studios et syndicats sur les nouvelles normes de sécurité à adopter dans l'industrie du cinéma. "Nous travaillons là-dessus depuis de nombreuses semaines, il y a beaucoup de questions complexes", relève Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, dirigeant d'un large syndicat de défense des acteurs. Parmi ses revendications figurent notamment des tests de dépistage quotidiens pour les acteurs les plus exposés à une potentielle contamination, lors de scènes de sexe ou de bagarre par exemple. Un accord est attendu le mois prochain entre les différentes parties, mais il restera encore à régler l'épineuse question des assurances. Suspendre la production d'un film peut être si coûteux que les compagnies d'assurance écartent, dans leurs nouveaux contrats, les risques liés au Covid-19. "D'après ce qui se dit, les autorités vont devoir intervenir" afin de régler ce différend, note le syndicaliste Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. Pour l'heure, les quelques tournages qui reprennent à Hollywood font l'objet de tractations au cas par cas avec les syndicats. Et les producteurs apprennent à se montrer créatifs pour les sites de tournage, les lieux publics très fréquentés étant d'office écartés. "Les scénaristes sont très astucieux. Certains écrivent des scènes se déroulant dans des lieux plus isolés, comme des sites industriels", confie à l'AFP le président de FilmLA Paul Audley. D'autres productions choisissent une autre voie, plus directe mais plus risquée, en tournant sans autorisation. Mais les riverains, relève-t-il, n'hésitent pas à dénoncer les tournages sauvages auprès de son organisme. Malgré l'attractivité croissante de nouveaux sites comme la Géorgie, dans le sud-est du pays, Los Angeles garde une longueur d'avance en termes de services et de confort, assurent les professionnels californiens. Les acteurs "préfèrent travailler près de chez eux", note Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. "Surtout en des temps si incertains".

Unguja. Zanzibar has been named a top destination for those seeking relaxation and pleasure during the 2023 summer by ‘The Travel’.

Tourists who are looking for the most memorable summer experience are spoiled for choice when they explore Africa's natural beauty.

The magazine also names other myriads of natural wonders and hidden gems in Africa, which are the most beautiful places to visit, each destination offering a unique blend of relaxation, adventure, and beauty.

Recent statistics have shown that the industry has since rebound from the shock waves of the pandemic with January and February hitting record numbers that had never been reached before.

Zanzibar had a total of 701,189 bed-spaces in January 2023 of which 578,719 beds were sold representing a bed occupancy rate of 82.5 percent.

According to the magazine, for centuries, Zanzibar has been one of the most beautiful summer destinations in Africa which consists of gorgeous islands, the most beautiful of which is named after the archipelago itself.

“With pristine white sand and clear beaches, Zanzibar is a refreshing spot worth exploring during the summer,” writes the magazine.

While in Zanzibar, tourists can explore breathtaking African tourist spots such as the winding streets of Stone Town, the historic capital of Zanzibar, and they can even catch a glimpse of the archipelago’s cultural heritage.

The magazine says, Zanzibar is one of the most rewarding tropical beach destinations in all of Africa to visit comparing it to the Maldives or Tahiti.

Three of the hotspots to stay on the island are the northern coastal paradise of Nungwi, the historical bustling town of Stonetown, and the kite-surfing and party-dominated coastal resort of Paje.

Work starts on public company register

A year and a half after Premier Andrew Fahie promised to work with the United Kingdom toward establishing a public register of beneficial ownership by 2023, he has announced that progress toward the goal is under way amid a UK-led crackdown partially directed toward Russian oligarchs in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“On 22nd of September 2020, I stood in the House of Assembly and gave a commitment to work in collaboration with the United Kingdom government towards a publicly accessible register of beneficial ownership for companies in line with international standards and best practices as they develop globally and at least as implemented by [European Union] member states by 2023, in furtherance of the EU Fifth Anti-Money Laundering Directive,” the premier said during a press conference last week. “The consultation process with the financial service industry will commence in short order.

“The policy lead will rest with my executive team in the Ministry of Finance, who will work closely with the BVI Financial Services Commission.”

UK bill

The announcement was followed by Tuesday’s early-morning Royal Assent for the UK’s new Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Act, which was rushed through the UK Parliament last week in response to the Ukraine invasion.

The bill is designed to allow the UK to move more quickly to impose new sanctions against oli garchs and intensify enforcement of sanctions already in place.

Amid the bill’s more important provisions is a new Register of Overseas Entities, requiring people behind foreign companies that own UK property — many of which are VI-registered — to reveal their identities.

UK Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said, “There is absolutely no room for illicit finance in the UK, and by bringing forward this Economic Crime Act at unprecedented speed we’ve put [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, and the corrupt elites propping him up, on notice. Our new Register of Overseas Entities, the first of its kind in the world, will have an immediate dissuasive effect on oligarchs attempting to hide their ill-gotten gains, ensuring that the UK is a place for legitimate business only.”

Under the new act, entities that refuse to reveal a beneficial owner will face tough restrictions on selling their property, and those who break the rules could face a fine of up to £2,500 per day or up to five years in prison, according to the bill, which is expected to be a valuable tool for law enforcement agencies in investigating suspicious wealth.

According to the UK Parliament, Companies House will begin work to implement the register “as quickly as possible,” working closely with the UK’s three land registries. Any foreign company selling properties between Feb. 28 and the full implementation of the register will also be required to submit its details at the point of sale, Parliament stated.

UK Home Secretary Priti Patel said, “This government has moved quickly to strengthen our response to Putin’s cronies and ensure that corrupt elites have nowhere to hide their dirty money in the UK. We will continue to work with our international partners to take the strongest possible action against those who enable this unprovoked aggression towards Ukraine.”

VI commitment

Here in the Virgin Islands, Mr. Fahie said the commitment to a public company register, for which the VI was the final holdout among the British overseas territories, was one which he “did not give lightly, nor did I give it without reservation.”

“Whilst we continue to monitor developments on the subject of publicly accessible registers, as they feature in various international forums, and whilst we continue to make the case for a slightly different strategic approach, we must of course take the appropriate steps to honour our commitment if and when called upon,” he added.

The premier said he is confident that collaboration with the private sector will give the VI “the best framework that we can negotiate and with the legal protections, safeguards and security that I have insisted on all along, if publicly accessible registers for beneficial ownership indeed are to become operational by next year.”

He added, “I repeat my earlier caution that throughout these negotiations, prudence and balance must be the guiding mantra.”

Recently published decisions from a Jan. 19 Cabinet meeting provided some details on the rollout of the register.

In the meeting, Cabinet members decided that the FSC will be responsible for housing any public register and for “urgently” commencing “sourcing an estimate” for including such a register in its revamped Virtual Integrated Registry Regulatory General Information Network Platform, known as VIRRGIN LEAP, according to a summary of the Jan. 19 meeting released Monday by the Cabinet Office.

The new platform will incorporate functions for recording the “receipt, update, confirmation of accuracy, maintenance and [public] accessibility of beneficial ownership information,” the summary noted. It added that the financial secretary will be the designated decisionmaker “where approvals are required from the government.”

MONROVIA – Importers of petroleum products in Liberia are said to be creating an artificial shortage of diesel and gasoline in the country in a bid to escalate the stipulated prices released by the Government of Liberia (GOL), paralyzing and sabotaging normal working, commercial and academic activities the smooth movement of people, goods, services across the nation.

Some of the major importers of petroleum products in Liberia include Aminata and Sons, SP, NP, Total, Srimex, Jomanday, among others.

A gallon of gasoline or diesel is being sold for around L$1200 (US$8) from the previous price of L$750 (US$5).

The storages or terminals of these importers at the Liberia Petroleum and Refining Company (LPRC) and elsewhere remain stocked with thousands of gallons of petroleum products, but their unbending refusal to supply the local market continues to suffer not only commuters, but other who engage into the retail sale of gasoline and diesel to sustain them and their respective family members.

The prices of petroleum products, especially gasoline have skyrocketing in recent times, imposing additional hardship on the already impoverished Liberian people and escalating tension in the nation.

Sources have hinted that these importers have been reportedly meeting to increase the prices of the commodities in a bid to increase their profits.

The resolved increment has not been accepted by the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) led-government of President George Manneh Weah.

As a result of this, these importers are reneging to sell to retailers. They are also refusing to release their products to their respective filling stations across the nation.

They want a US$1 increment on each gallon, citing the current situation between Ukraine and Russia as a case in point to guarantee their clandestine move.

Though there are reports that the move is intended to raise money for some of these business people to support the campaign of President Weah in 2023, citizens, especially less fortunate Liberians are the ones mostly affected.

On the Bushrod Island and in central Monrovia, commercial drivers and riders of taxis and tricycles are seen in long queues at various filling stations during the early morning hours to purchase diesel or gasoline.

The prices of basic commodities are increasing astronomically as a result of increase in transportation fares. Between L$50 to L$100 have been added on most transportation fares in Monrovia and other parts adjacent.

“We will continue to increase transportation fares because, the government is not ready yet, how will you allow business people to determine prices just to suffer your own people. The petroleum importers now are deciding who to sell to”, Andrew Williams, a commercial taxi driver stated.

Passengers are engaged into commotions, which sometimes lead to fistfight, over the payment of transportation fares.

As a result of the situation, most young people prefer trekking to reduce their transportation fares, while others stormed various bus parking to get to and from their respective destinations.

“The bus parking is really parked today. It’s because of the gas business. Many people do not love to ride bus especially on Monday because of the traffic. But taxi drivers are over charging the passengers and so, they are forced to come ride buses”, Winston, a car loader around the Point Four junction stated.

The Tomcard

At some of these filling stations, supervisors and pump attendants are refusing to serve those they referred to as “camp boys” and other commercial taxi drivers and kehkeh riders.

Camp boys are young Liberians who normally sell petroleum products on sidewalks. They sell above the usual gas station price.

They usually paid attention to those carrying “Tomcard” or coupons of their various filling stations.

Harmon Sackie, a kehkeh rider stated: “For me, I bought one gallon for L$1000 this morning; as soon it reached around 1PM, I went back to the same gas station and the people said they were not serving kehkeh again but only those who had coupous. So, I left and went to buy gas on the sidewalk for L$1350. If I paid that type of money just for one gallon, you think I will not carry the transportation up too? I will carry it up. Everyone will pay for it”.

As a result of this, many of those searching for the commodities depart these filling stations in a frustrated mood after being denied from purchasing the products.

Some of them are even constrained to stand in long queues for hours, but denied from being served immediately after reaching the pump attendant.

Owners of few private and commercial vehicles have also taken a decision to park their cars until the situation is addressed.

Importers’ statement

In a statement issued in Monrovia on Sunday, June 5, petroleum importers under the banner, Petroleum Importers Association of Liberia, said they are experiencing losses as a result of the current crisis between Russia and Ukraine.

“We are pleased to draw the attention of the government and people of Liberia to the increase in world market prices and Premiums on Petroleum products due to the Russian- Ukraine crisis. This has increased our cost by about $1.00 on both Diesel and Gasoline as petroleum products are priced daily based on World market price movements”.

Sagicor Life Caribbean operations still strong

The Sagicor Life Inc. a wholly-owned subsidiary of financial services giant Sagicor Financial Company has had another solid year’s performance.

In its recently released audited year-end results, the company conceded that it was impacted heavily by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Sagicor Life reported net income of BDS$369.99 million for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2021, when compared with the BDS$165.14 million for 2020.

Sagicor Life Inc, which has its own board of directors, chaired by Stephen McNamara, is described by Sagicor Financial Company as the intermediate parent company for Sagicor’s Caribbean operations.

Its principal activities include the provision of life, annuity, health, property, and casualty insurance coverage.

It is also involved in financial services such as pension management, asset management and banking.

McNamara, in comments accompanying the financials, noted that the pandemic and the economic environment across the Caribbean dampened the performance and most countries experienced significantly reduced air and sea travel .

“Sagicor Life Inc, like other companies, has continued to focus on supporting our staff, customers and suppliers, while developing responses to the business disruption,” the chairman said, adding that the group’s 2021 performance demonstrated its team’s ability to navigate the current circumstances

“The Group delivered net income attributable to the shareholder of $243.4 million, compared to $188.3 million in the prior year. Total revenue stood at $2,411.4 million, compared to the prior year amount of $2,271.2 million.

“Net premium revenue closed at $1,389.4 million, compared to $1,491.1 million in the prior year; the prior year included a large single premium annuity sale of $128.0 million,” McNamara told stakeholders in the public filing.

The chairman assured policyholders, shareholders and regulators and employees that the financial position of the Sagicor Life Inc Group “remains strong”, with assets totalling $12.3 billion and liabilities of BBD $9.0 billion.

This, he noted, resulted in Group equity of $3.3 billion, compared to $3.2 billion in the 2020.

“Shareholder’s equity stood at $2.2 billion, compared to $2.1 billion for the prior year,” he stated.

The company was given a clean report by its auditor PricewaterhouseCoopers. (IMC1)

Digitising music is the way to go

Acquiring revenue from the sale of digitised music, subscription and streaming services, is still a mystery for many Caribbean performers, song writers, producers and others involved in the music production.

However, a special project led by Barbadian entertainment consultant Derek Wilkie, and financed by the Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) Creative and Cultural Industries Innovation Fund (CIIF), is putting artistes from several Caribbean countries much closer to accessing these platforms and monetising their creations. According to statistics from the American music industry, subscription and streaming revenues reached US$10.07 billion in 2020, making up the vast majority of revenues for the entire music industry.

Wilkie, however, is concerned that too many regional artistes are absent for this lucrative space. As a result, he is working to ensure that Caribbean performers with existing musical work and those creating new music, are armed with the knowledge and capabilities to exploit the fullest economic gains possible from their creativity.

The accelerator, facilitated by the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation, with contributions from regional partners the Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA) and Compete Caribbean, catered to Caribbean performers, composers, and authors of musical works to help them transition from the physical distribution of music to the modern mode of digital distribution.

The project, which received US$40,000 in CDB funding, attracted 22 participants from Grenada, St Vincent, Guyana, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago, who were exposed to insight from the some of the leading experts in the area. Of the original funding US$10,000 was offered as a grant prize to one participant to develop a marketing and business plan for a new release.

Wilkie, the lead project facilitator, explained: “A great team of internationally regarded music professionals including Ivan Berry, Devon Carty and Spencer Mussellam, the label manager of Believe Music, based in Canada was assembled. Believe Music is a huge player in the digital music industry. They are a distribution partner who receive content and then they filter it out to all of the streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and others.”

The lead facilitator is a founder member of the Barbados Copyright Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (COSCAP) and a former chair of the Caribbean Copyright Link, the body set up to facilitate the region’s performing rights organisations. “We in the region are producing a lot of work and putting it out there but we are, for the most part, doing it incorrectly. For example, people are releasing new music, uploading it to YouTube and other streaming platforms without any sort of metadata. The metadata is the DNA of the song.

“It says who is the producer, composer, the author, the publisher and it carries unique code numbers that identify the music when it is streamed globally. This allows you to get royalties coming through the system for us to get paid,” the entertainment executive disclosed. Without that data, he disclosed, the music of Caribbean artistes could be downloaded and streamed millions of times without the revenue from royalties ever paid to the rightful owners.

The CDB’s CIIF-funded project is an attempt to address this situation by training and equipping regional writers, producers, authors and publishers with practical real-world experience in the processes. Participants are from across the Caribbean from Guyana, through the Eastern Caribbean and The Bahamas in the South.

“We held a 4-day session to hear from them first, learning what they are doing and giving them the best leads and possible strategies for new releases in a digital medium.” The music executive added: “It was interesting to hear from some of them what they were doing.”

A frequent lament emerging from participants was their inability to realise revenue even when it appeared their music was gaining significant traction online. As Wilkie explained, “You can’t get royalties if no one knows that you are to be paid because you are not in the system correctly.” “A lot of time was also spent during the project on marketing and the procedures required before releasing new music and what needs to be done on a global basis to create an audience,” Wilkie pointed out.

Conceding there was still so much for Caribbean creatives to learn about operating in the digital space, he recommended more collaborations between bodies such as COSCAP, the Jamaica Association of Composers Authors and Publishers, and intellectual property rights partners around the world.

“Performing rights organisations in the region, at this point, are unable to properly monitor the vast amount and volume of music that is being streamed and released. “There are millions of songs streamed every day and somebody has to analyse it. We don’t have wherewithal to do that in the Caribbean and so we need reciprocal agreements to make sure we get paid as well.”

Despite the trepidation of some regional creatives to enter the digital music and streaming space, Wilkie assured that once undertaken correctly, streamed music can become a reliable source of income. He added: “With the digital platforms, people are still uploading back catalogues released many years ago.
