160 perform in DanceFest

It was a night of pirouettes, croisés and pliés during the annual BVI DanceFest on Sunday at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, where young dancers took the stage at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium to showcase what they’ve learned over the past year.

“These dancers will perform en pointe after the waltz, then the Dying Swan will finish with a fast-paced finale of pirouettes,” said emcee and BVI Dance School alumna Alecia Penn before the sixth act of the night.

Then six dancers took the stage dressed in black feathered costumes to perform four parts of a swan saga.

Sunday’s three-hour show was the second of the weekend, following another performance on Saturday night. Both nights consisted of 26 dances in several styles spread across two acts.

BVI Dance School Director Sandy Lyons said more than 820 tickets were sold over the weekend, with both evenings selling out. At least 160 dancers performed each night, she added.

“Once again, we were thrilled with the outcome,” Ms. Lyons said.“We feel the kids are getting better and better through their determination and perseverance.”

The BVI Dance School’s showcase usually takes place in June when the children wrap up their school term and the dance term.

First-timers

Some of the dancers — like the “Tots 1” class — took the stage for the first time, often looking to the side of the stage where their instructor helped them with the moves. The little dancers leapt and ran across the stage, helping each other stay on count and in position throughout their performances.

Dancers from grade four opened the night with a dance to the song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from the Disney movie Encanto.

Dashes of culture were served during the intermediate ballet group’s performance of “Hungarian Czardas” and the grade three ballet group’s dance to “The Reel,” an Irish folk song.

The grade five ballet class danced to the song “A Beautiful Noise,” demonstrating the “power of speaking up to make the world a better place,” Ms. Penn said.

Aerial dancers took the stage at the beginning of the second act, when three sets of three dancers performed aerial moves with silks.

The dances were choreographed by teachers Sylvanna Charles, Sara Smith, Jo-Ann Downing, Amanda Georges, Heather Butcher, and Ms. Lyons.

Scholarships

The proceeds from tickets and raffles held during the shows will go toward the BVI Children’s DanceFest Committee, Ms. Lyons said. That money is used to fund scholarships for dancers who are unable to pay for classes; to fund workshops; and to pay for the venue at HLSCC, according to the director.

“We miss our old cultural centre because we used to be able to do this show in one night and have 1,200 people there,” Ms. Lyons said of the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall, which has stood unused since being badly damaged in Hurricane Irma.

The school has counted its dance fests since 2000, the year the organising committee was established, even though it held similar events prior to that, according to Ms. Lyons.

There are at least four dance schools across Tortola. At first, she said, all the schools were invited to take part in the DanceFest, but now most of them host their own showcases separately.

The BVI Dance School resumes classes in September, but spectators might catch some of the dancers in a festival troupe led by Ms. Charles in August.

Although the Sputnik V was the first COVID-19 vaccine to be registered for use in any nation, it
is yet to receive approval for emergency use from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the WHO.

Approval by the WHO is crucial for widespread distribution through the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) initiative, which is providing vaccine doses for lower-income nations.

Mrs Adeyeye said despite the vaccine not getting approval from the health regulatory bodies, the agency had done a thorough assessment of the vaccine and found that the benefits outweigh the risks.

“Sputnik V is yet to receive the EUL approval and therefore was subjected to full six-months review by NAFDAC. The agency did a thorough assessment of each vaccine and were found to have the quality, safety and efficacy attributes, with the benefits far outweighing the risks,” she said.

Despite the absence of approval from the EMA or the WHO, several countries, including South Korea, Argentina and India, are already manufacturing Sputnik V. India also plans to pump out at least 850 million doses, to help speed up the vaccination of its embattled population.

Many other countries, such as Hungary and Iran, are importing Sputnik V, and it has become a key plank of their vaccination campaigns.

Expected Vaccines

Having exhausted the initial four million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines delivered in March 2021 through COVAX, Nigeria is expecting additional 41,282,770 doses by the end of September.

The expected dose is a combination of the AstraZeneca vaccines, Pfizer-Bio-N Tech/Moderna and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccines.

The Executive Director of Nigeria’s Immunisation agency, Faisal Shuaib, at a briefing on Tuesday said the vaccines are expected from COVAX while the Jassen vaccines are expected from the African Union Commission.

He said: “We have received communication for the delivery of the following vaccine shipments in the coming months. 3,924,000 doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca/Moderna by end of July or early August 2021 from the COVAX facility.

“3,930,910 doses of Pfizer-Bio-N Tech/Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in August from the COVAX facility donated by the United States Government, 3,577,860 doses of Pfizer-Bio-N Tech/Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in Q3 from the COVAX facility.

“29,850,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson (Jassen) COVID-19 vaccine by the end of September will arrive in batches from the African Union Commission.”

He also said 3,938,945 eligible persons across 36 states and FCT have so far been vaccinated.
The AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is given in double doses. A person is required to come back for a second shot, some weeks after taking the first jab.

“2,534,205 people have been vaccinated for the first dose and 1,404,205 have received their second dose of the vaccine,” he said.

Kenya benefits from Sh21mn Hungary-Slovania Joint Health Care program

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 12- The governments of Hungary and the Republic of Slovenia have implemented the Joint Health Care Assistance project worth Sh21 million in Kenya with the aim of deepening and expanding productive relations between the three countries.

Kenyatta National Hospital, the National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital and the Kericho County Referral Hospital were the first ones to benefit from medical equipment including 27 hospital beds made in Slovenia.

Equipment donated include 27 hospital beds, 5 patient monitors, 3 blood chemistry analysers, 4 infant incubators and 5 surgical trolleys equipped with all the relevant surgical tools to various hospitals.

Speaking at the Nairobi Spinal Injury Hospital on Tuesday during the handover ceremony, Hungarian Ambassador to Kenya Zsolt Mészáros, said the goal of the program is to contribute to the development of the country’s health care capacities with a particular view to the severity of the current global situation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic

“Development cooperation with Kenya in the field of health is of utmost priority for the Government of Hungary. In May 2020, Hungary signed a framework agreement on financial cooperation with Kenya,” he said.

Slovenia was represented at the event by Majda Provoden-Nginja, the Honorary Consul.

Health Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman said the project and the care centre were timely as the country is focused on ensuring that health care becomes accessible to all Kenyans at all times

“The government of Kenya is committed to the provision of specialized healthcare not only with regard to the burden of violence, injuries and trauma but also in responding to the rising burden of non-communicable diseases,” he said.

Barbados’ exciting teenage forward Thierry Gale registered yet another milestone as he scored on debut recently for Budapest Honved Football Club in the Hungarian Premier League.

Even though it was a bittersweet moment for the 18-year-old Barbadian as his team lost 2-1 to Mezokovesd Football Club, Gale was however elated about his goal scored in the 86th minute.

Speaking with Barbados TODAY, Gale said: “I am very excited about scoring on debut but we lost the game so I wasn’t thinking about it too much. We have a lot of matches in hand so hopefully, we will bounce back.”

Budapest Honved is currently tenth in the 12-team standings and are facing relegation. But Gale is confident that his team has what it takes to revive themselves.

“It is a very strong team. It is a very talented team also and I am the youngest in the team. There are very nice people but right now we are in a difficult situation and everybody’s under pressure. Everybody is very scared but I think we can come back because we are a very strong team,” he explained.

Gale admitted that he does feel a bit of pressure upfront because his team is facing relegation. However, since playing in Hungary for the past two years he has gotten acclimatized and is confident of doing well.

“I have acclimatized well in the first year, to be honest. It was very difficult for me. But after that, it was very easy. When I first came here, I was training with the team but I was unable to play because I did not have a contract. So, basically I was already gelling with them even before I had my contract,” Gale said.

He added: “Yes I do feel the pressure a little bit because we are in the regulation zone and when I come on everyone expects me to score and do something good. So, there is a little pressure but I am not worried about it too much.”

Gale has one main goal in mind and that is to bring the team out of relegation and win the cup. Compared to Barbados the style of play in Hungary is very different and involves a lot of running, Gale noted, but said physically he was up for the challenge.

“I am feeling good physically but the first time after the Christmas break in Barbados I was struggling a little bit. So, I had to go to the fitness coach for two weeks and I had to miss like two matches but then I got fit and strong again,” said Gale a former St. Leonard Boys’ student.

Jones, Foxes advance to EuroLeague quarterfinals

Bahamian Jonquel Jones and her Russian club, the UMMC Ekaterinburg Foxes, remained unbeaten, advancing to the quarterfinals of the EuroLeague Women after taking care of Italy’s Beretta Familia Schio with a 74-58 victory at the Palasport Livi o Romare in Schio, Italy, on Wednesday afternoon.

Jones finished with eight points and seven boards in 18 minutes of play. The center shot 4-for-5 from the field to finish the game at an 80 percent clip. Her only missed shot came from beyond the three-point arc. Jones dished out one assist and had two steals. Her seven boards were tied for a game-high with her teammate Courtney Vandersloot.

The Foxes, the two-time defending champions, now have a perfect 4-0 win/loss record in Group C play as they sit atop the table with eight points. They are now the second team in the competition to make it to the quarterfinals. Hungary’s Sopron Basket, which plays in Group D, was the first team to advance to the quarterfinals, sitting with a perfect 5-0 record.

Second in Group C is Spain’s Spar Girona with a 3-1 record and seven points. Schio is third with a 1-3 record and five points. Sitting at the bottom of the table in fourth place is Latvia’s TTT Riga, which is looking for its first win after four games.

Jones got on the scoreboard early in the game when she made a jump shot to put her team up 5-0 with 8:52 remaining in the first quarter. Those two points were a part of a 16-0 scoring run that the Foxes used to open the game. Vandersloot connected on a jump shot with 5:53 remaining in the first quarter to end the run. This run set the trend for the rest of the game. The Foxes played good defense that led to easy offense the rest of the way.

Schio got on the scoreboard when Jillian Harmon scored a jumper with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter. The period ended with the Foxes taking a commanding 22-10 lead. Jones scored four points in that quarter.

It was a competitive game in the second quarter, but Jones and the Foxes still kept the game at a double-digit distance for the duration of the second quarter as they outscored Schio 16-13 in that stanza to take a 38-23 lead heading into the half.

The third quarter was the most competitive as Schio opened on a 9-0 run to cut the Foxes’ lead down to just six points at 38-32 with 7:53 remaining in the third. Jones connected on a jump shot to end Schio’s run and put her team up 40-32. That basket came on a Vandersloot assist with 7:36 remaining in the third quarter.

The Foxes took the lead back up to double digits but Schio went on a run again, and Sandrine Gruda hit a shot to cut the lead down to just four points, 46-42, with 4:30 left in the third period. The Foxes used a crucial scoring run to increase the lead and ended the period up 54-45. Schio outscored the Foxes in that quarter, 22-16.

With the Foxes regaining full control of the game at the end of the third quarter, Jones was done, sitting down for the rest of the game. The Foxes outscored Schio in the fourth quarter 20-13 to win the game.

Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) 2020 Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) Breanna Stewart led all scorers with 16 points for the Foxes. Alba Torrens had 10 assists to lead the Foxes in that department.

Jones and her squad finished with a 39-28 rebounding advantage. They also shot the ball better from the field, shooting 50 percent compared to Schio’s 40.3 percent.

Schio never led in the game. There were no lead changes or ties and the Foxes led by as much as 18 points.

The Foxes have two more group games remaining as they continue their quest for a third straight title. They will play today when they take on Girona at 11 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). Their final group game will be tomorrow against Riga at 11 a.m. EST. Both games will be at the Palasport Livi o Romare in Schio and will be streamed live on FIBA’s YouTube page.

Carter splashes to double silver in Hungary

OLYMPIC-BOUND swimmer Dylan Carter splashed to double silver and set two national records on match day ten of the International Swimming League (ISL) in Hungary on Tuesday.

At the Duna Arena in Budapest, the Los Angeles Current (LAC) swimmer clocked 50.11 seconds in the men’s 100m backstroke to capture runner-up spot. LAC teammate Ryan Murphy won gold in 49.93s while Cali Condors’ Radoslaw Kawecki (50.17s) rounded off the top-three finishers.

In the men’s 50m backstroke skins, Carter (24.99s) once again finished in silver-medal position behind eventual winner Murphy (24.18s). A skins event is a fast-paced series of back-to-back races on a knockout basis, with the last two remaining swimmers racing each other in a head-to-head final race.

After qualifying third fastest (23.28s) of the eight swimmers in round one, Carter advanced to the final by clocking the second fastest (23.93s) time in round two. In the final, however, Murphy again got the better of Carter.

Additionally, the TT athlete also produced record-breaking performances in 4x100m freestyle and 100m butterfly events.

In the former, Carter and his LAC teammates Apostolus Christou, Tomoe Hvas and Andrew Seliskar finished seventh in 3:12.52. The TT swimmer swam the opening leg in 46.56 seconds and clocked the fastest time of the four.

His dominant display saw him wipe away George Bovell III’s 16-year record of 47.06s. Bovell is TT’s only five-time Olympic swimmer, and earned bronze in the 200m medley at the 2004 Summer Games.

Cali Condors went on to win this event in 3:05.52. Another LAC team was third in 3:06.99.

Carter then produced another national record-breaking performance in the men’s 100m butterfly by finishing seventh in 50.70s. This was also a personal best time for the 26-year old, who also bettered Joshua McLeod’s time of 52.81s, set in 2012.

In other races on match day nine (Monday), LAC finished eighth in the men’s 4x100m medley relay. Carter, Christou, Will Licon and Marco Ferreira clocked 3:28.40. LAC also fielded another team for this event which went on to win in 3:21.26.

After 39 events on Monday, LAC finished in second position on the table with 495 points. Cali Condors topped the field with 558pts while London Roar (398pts) and Aqua Centurions (255pts) rounded off the top four.
