Women vendors at Mandinaba market, children and the community’s police station have benefited from a significant facemask donation on Monday by The Rural Child; a registered charitable organisation based in Mandinaba.
The donation is part of the organisation’s efforts in curtailing community transmission of the virus that is causing panic around the world.
The virus contraction is increasing in The Gambia with majority of the confirmed cases being contracted through community transmission.
“This is our part of contribution to ensure that community transmission of the virus is addressed by providing and encouraging the wearing of facemasks,” said the organization’s health officer, Mamudou Sumbundou.
He said Mandinaba women vendors became their main concern due to their daily contact with travelers who usually buy fruits and other food items from them.
Mr Sumbundou reminded the women, police and children that Coronavirus is real and they must ensure that they adhere to recommended precautionary measures to control its spread including regular wearing of facemasks.
The organisation’s coordinator, Amadou Jallow said the virus has now changed the ways of life around the world, killing thousands on daily basis.
He assured the beneficiaries that they will continue to play their part in the fight against the virus, calling for partnership and support to help rural community in the control of community transmission.
Mr Jallow said their main focus is child empowerment and protection, women and youth empowerment, human rights promotion and community development in rural Gambia, saying rural communities need support in understanding Coronavirus and how to protect themselves and others.
He also thanked the Bottrop Project for supporting them with facemasks.
Secretary, Alhagie Jassey observed that the women vendors need support in this period as they have direct daily contact with food and people from different parts of the country and even beyond.
Station officer of Mandinaba police station thanked the organisation for providing facemasks to them, saying this will empower them to effectively carryout their daily functions.

Resident Minister opens Skye Bank Bo Branch

The first provincial branch of Skye Bank (SL) Limited has been opened in the southern city of Bo by the Resident Minister Hon. Mohamed E.K. Alie.

The opening ceremony which took place on Wednesday 25th May 2022 at the Bank edifice at 148 Mahie Boima Road, Bo was graced by the Resident Minster, Boja Chiefdom Paramount Chief PC Samba Sindi Hindowa, Brigade Commander, the Police and the bank’s esteemed customers among others.

Skye Bank is ranked among the top 10 banks in Sierra Leone and offers excellent banking services anchored by its team of seasoned and dedicated staff.

The Resident Minister Hon. Mohamed E.K. Alie welcomed the Skye Bank in Bo and also thanked them for choosing Bo as their first provincial destination to open a branch.

He promised that they will work with the Bank and provide the adequate security for them to do their business.

He called on residents of Bo to save with Skye Bank as it is a credible bank and can be accessed anywhere and anytime the need arises.

Skye Bank is an international bank operating in Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Skye Bank Board Chairman, Hon. Brima Conteh described the occasion as a beginning of a journey which intends to take the bank across the provinces of Sierra Leone.

He went on to say in Sierra Leone, they can reflect on the decade long stay of Skye Bank’s growth and progress, and they can think ahead to a future of determination and stand to the challenges posed by the industry.

He expressed his gratitude to the Central Bank of Sierra Leone for welcoming Skye Bank initiative to venture into the provinces.

Paramount Chief Bo Kakua Chiefdom, Hon. PC Lappia Boima commended Skye Bank for chosen Bo as their first destination in the provinces. He encouraged his people to bank with Skye Bank as it is a good and credible bank.

Alusine Kamara of Kam Enterprise one of the Bank’s customers said he has been with Skye Bank for over five years because of their efficiency.

He said they have been supporting the Bank in Freetown now when it is in Bo it will be continues process as he was one of the intermediary for the bank to open branch in Bo.

“The bank is a very credible, just like any top bank in the country. I want to assured to Skye Bank to be rest assured of our continuous support.”

In his closing remarks, Skye Bank Managing Director, Akinwale Akinremi thanked dignitaries for witnessing such an historic event and announced free gifts for those that opened accounts that day.

He also used the opportunity to disclose that the Bank launched its Savings Promo in Bo for people to save a minimum of Le 200,000 in their account for three months duration.

After the three months, a raffle draws will be conducted for 30 winners and each winner will receive Le 1,000,000 including several consolation prizes as a way of giving back to society.

No Care Taker Cabinet

The Constitution is very clear on what will happen in terms of cabinet formation after the inauguration of a president. Section 71 of the Constitution categorically states that the President should not waste any time in constituting a new cabinet immediately after his inauguration.

The reason for this is simple. The position of all the ministers become null and void immediately after inauguration.

Section 71(4)(a) states:

“(4) The office of a Ministers shall become vacant –

(a) on the assumption by a person of the office of President;”

Hence according to section 71 (4)(a) as soon as the president is sworn-in the offices of all ministers become vacant and he has to rely on section 71(3) which states:

“Ministers shall be appointed by the President and shall, before assuming the functions of their office, take and subscribe the prescribed oaths.”

Hence the president should constitute his new cabinet now, regardless of whether it symbolizes old wine in new bottles as the old saying goes.

So it seems, if we go by section 71(4). When the president assumes office the positions of ministers become vacant. That is the constitutional position. If the president wants to avoid an NGO taking ministers to court for unconstitutionally occupying their positions, he should ensure that they are sworn-in immediately.

Bologna and Gambia star Musa Barrow’s 71-minute goal puts the Scorpions in the quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as they beat one of the tournament’s favourites Guinea Conakry by 1-0.

An excellent finish from a smooth pass from Yusupha Bobb was enough for Barrow who has been one of the best players in the tournament yet—contributing a goal in all four matches the country played so far. His splendid performance has earned the Man Of The Match for the second time.

Gambia who are one of two debutants in the continent’s flagship tournament have made history by reaching this stage for the first time trying.

The lowest-ranked team at the Afcon grabbed their famous win and continued their unbeaten run in the Afcon.

Coach Saintfiet made changes to the team that started Thursday’s 1-0 defeat of Tunisia. Sulayman Marreh and Ablie Jallow returned, while Modou Barrow, Saidy Janko, and goalkeeper Baboucarr Gaye kept their positions. Ebrima Darboe made his first start of the competition.

Yusupha Njie was given a red card in his debut match and Guinea’s Kante sent off in the last seconds.

Before the game started, the Scorpions suffered a huge blow with players being pulled out of the match-squad.

“Ibou Touray just pulled out of the game. Together with Noah Sonko and Saidy Janko, all three have food poisoning and cannot play. In comes his place is Dawda Ngum for his first appearance for the tournament. Because it’s a late withdrawal, it means Gambia has just used one of its five substitutes,” the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) announced on its Facebook platform.

Also, ahead of the game, GFF President Lamin Kaba Bajo announced that each member will be given $10,000:00 if they win the match.

Banjul United Pick Up First Win Against Marimoo

Banjul United have finally picked up their first three points in the First Division league on Sunday after triumphing over Marimoo FC. Played at the Late Ousman Saho Field in Old Yundum, the bottom team in the domestic top-flight beat Marimoo 2-0 courtesy of Muhammed Samba and Ansu Jawara.

Both Banjul United and Marimoo FC were winless in the first division league before squaring off on matchday six. Before the encounter, Banjul United were first-from-bottom in the 16-team league with one point, while Marimoo FC occupied 13th-placed on three points.

The former lost four of their five matches, scored twice and conceded 9 times, while the latter scored once and conceded three goals. Both teams have the chance to secure the first win or share the points. The win for Banjul United has earned them 4 points now and jumped out from the bottom spot.

Falcons FC Defeat Reigning Champions Fortune FC

Promoted side Falcons FC have defeated reigning Champions Fortune FC by 2-1 on Sunday at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

The Abuko-based side goals were scored by Edward Ndecky and Pa Abdou Cham and Edi scored for the Petroleum Boys.

The Blue Army dropped points in their previous matches and lost the top spot to Real de Banjul and now Waa Banjul. Their win will bring them closer to the table-toppers with 13 points—one point adrift of leaders.

Afcon 2021: Senegal beat nine-man Cape Verde 2-0 to qualify to last-8

Senegal has qualified to the next stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) after beating nine-man Cape Verde 2-0 on Tuesday at the Bafoussam Stadium, Cameroon.

The Teranga Lions had to wait until their opponents were down to nine men when two of their players were shown red cards—midfielder Patrick Andrade in the 21 minutes and goalkeeper Vozinha in the 57 minutes.

Liverpool and Senegal forward Sadio Mane opened the scoreline in 63 minutes as he curled the ball into the right corner of the net from a resulting corner. Senegal’s second goal was scored by Bamba Dieng in the 92nd minute of the game.

Struggling Samger FC will today square off with Elite United at the Independence Stadium at 7 pm on matchday six of the GFF First Division league 2021-22 football season.

Samger FC are finding life difficult in Gambia’s top-flight football as they are one of three teams yet to register a win in the country’s premier league.

Sat 15th-placed on two points before today’s match, a loss for Samger will send them to the bottom of the 16-team-league as previous occupants Banjul United won their week-six fixture against another struggling and winless side Marimoo 2-0 courtesy of Muhammed Samba and Ansu Jawara.

The Banjul-based club now have 4 points, ahead of Samger (2), Elite United (3) and Marimoo (3). If either Samger or Elite United win today, they will go ahead of Banjul United.

Three Games To Look Out For Today In Second Division

The second division league week 8 fixtures are out and here are three matches to look out for today in three different places.

Twelve-placed Wagadu FC will take on sixteen-placed Red Hawks FC at Soma Mini Stadium at 4 pm. The former earned 8 points while the latter get 7 points. Wagadu have won two games, drawn twice and lost three, while Red Hawks won two of their games, drawn once and lost three out of 7 matches.

At the Late Ousman Saho Football Field, Gunjur United and Dibba Oil FC are set to square off at 4 pm. It’s a fifth-placed and sixth-placed encounter with Gunjur (12) on a point adrift of Dibba Oil (11).

The Kombo South-based club are among the only four teams to have lost once in the league yet, while Dibba Oil suffered two defeats. The latter are however one of three sides to have scored more goals (12) in the second division, while the former scored 5 goals less than that feat.

The third and final game on Wednesday will witness top-four occupants Immigration FC face 13th-placed Waterside FC at the Independence Stadium in Bakau at 4 pm. Immigration have been in hot form in the beginning of the league but have since dropped points with the latest being a 1-3 loss against Greater Tomorrow FC. Waterside on the other hand are one of the inconsistent sides in the league, winning and drawing twice and losing three games out of 7. Immigration are on 13 points while Waterside have 8 points.
