It is to be recalled that the TPLF junta has gruesomely attacked the Ethiopian National Defense Forces base situated in the Tigray state. Regrettably, the sudden attack which was carried out by the junta ended up claiming the lives of quite a lot of soldiers.

Many of them closed their eyes never to open them again. On this account, Ethiopians residing all over the world have been expressing their disappointment strongly time and again.

The aforesaid statement was made by Major Amsalu Demeke, one of the survivors from the attack carried out by the TPLF Junta
members two weeks ago.

As the Major was not in the position to enter into an agreement with them, he managed to pass through many twists and turns. He did not anticipate he would stumble across such a heartbreaking scenario from his colleagues.

For refusing requests for standing by the side of the TPLF junta, the Major was able to pass through many highs and lows. Whatever came to pass, he was not interested to give the cold shoulder for his motherland-the only thing that he possesses on the planet earth.

While on the subject, Major Amsalu is one of the members of the 4th mechanized brigade. As learned from the interview he gave to the Ethiopian National Defense Forces media, as some of the mercenaries in the Ethiopian

National Defense forces’ in the brigade have had a hidden relationship with the TPLF junta officials they almost kept the military equipment except for guarding arms in the storehouse.

According to Major Amsalu, afterward, the murderous force made sure that everything fell under their control; they embarked on opening fire on the Ethiopian National Defense Forces. As everything was strange to him, he could not believe what he was seeing. He did not imagine this kind of evil-acts would take place in all his born days.

“When we headed straight to the army surplus store, we came across something that we did not anticipate. We encountered unanticipated things. The thing is, the junta’s force jumpstarted opening fire on the Ethiopian National Defense Forces and claiming the lives of several people at the stroke of a pen,” he continued.

Almost immediately, the TPLF Military junta snatched military equipment and slaughtered quite a lot of soldiers. They as well started taking off the soldiers’ military uniforms and hijacking them almost immediately. In due course, the TPLF junta force provided us with an option: “Without hesitation, stand by the side of us. If you fail to do, you will be killed at the drop of a hat.”

To the surprise of everyone, they have lived with us for more than twenty years. Though we showered the brute killers to pull themselves out of their evil acts, they kept on turning a blind eye. As they found that the fourth mechanized brigade remained stubborn, the situation kept on moving into uncharted waters. As time went by, all their efforts went for nothing as swiftly as possible.

Be that as it may, sometime in the past, the former officials of the camp were constantly paying a visit to the Ethiopian National Defense Forces and giving training for the mercenaries. By sending civilians, they sometimes made an effort to humiliate the army and sow division amid them.

The desired goal of sending them was to make the Ethiopian National Defense Forces lose patient and take measures against them. In doing so, they would like to make the general public stand against the Ethiopian National Defense Forces.

A lack of adequate financing for tackling climate change in Africa has become dire and is “choking” the continent, African Development Bank Group President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina said on Monday.

He was addressing scores of journalists from Africa and around the world at a media lunch organized to kick off its 2023 Annual Meetings in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm El Sheikh.

Adesina called out developed nations for not honoring the $100 billion-a-year climate finance pledge they made to developing countries.

“Africa is being short-changed in climate finance. Africa is choking,” he told the journalists.

“Your role as the media is very important to help carry the news – the news of efforts being made, challenges being faced, and the fierce urgency of now in getting much-needed climate finance to Africa,” the Bank chief said.

The Bank Group’s Annual Meetings will allow the Bank’s Board of Governors, African leaders and development partners to explore practical ways of “mobilizing private sector financing for climate and green growth in Africa,” in line with the theme of this year’s meetings.

Adesina said the theme was chosen to draw attention to the urgent need for climate finance. “Anywhere you look in Africa today, climate change is causing havoc,” Adesina said.

“In the Sahel, hotter temperatures are drying up limited water, causing water stress for crops and livestock and worsening food insecurity.”

The Bank chief said that in vast areas of East and Southern Africa, and in the Horn of Africa, a combination of droughts and floods is causing massive losses of people and infrastructure, leading to rising numbers of refugees.

“There is still much to do, as Africa’s private sector climate financing will need to increase by 36% annually,” he said.

The African Development Bank is spearheading climate adaptation efforts across the continent and has devoted 63% of its climate finance, the highest among all multilateral development banks.

The Bank’s new Climate Action Window will support millions of farmers, enabling them to access climate-resistant seeds. The institution has also launched the Desert to Power initiative to develop 10,000 megawatts of solar power to benefit nearly 250 million people across the Sahel.

The Bank and the Global Center for Adaptation have launched the African Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) to mobilize $25 billion to support Africa's adaptation to climate change. It has also established Alliance for Green Infrastructure (AGIA) in partnership with other institutions, to mobilize $10 billion in private investment for green infrastructure in Africa.

Adesina and the Bank Group’s operational vice presidents answered questions on the potential for using capital market instruments such as green bonds to back climate-related investments.

According to Bank estimates, Africa will need $2.7 trillion by 2030 to finance its climate change needs. Adesina said, “If Africa had that money, the Sahel would have electricity. If Africa had that money, we would recharge the Chad basin, which has provided livelihoods for millions of people in Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon. Everything will change in all those countries; we will green the Sahel. We will insure every single African country against catastrophic weather events.”

Adesina told the journalists, “Africa’s measured natural capital alone is estimated to be worth $6.2 trillion,” which, if well harnessed, can spur a more rapid economic growth and wealth generation.

He spoke about the Bank’s flagship Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) scheme that provides heat-tolerant seed varieties to increase yield in crops such as wheat. He gave the example of Ethiopia which is now self-sufficient in wheat production and plans to export the surplus to neighbouring countries.

Dr Adesina was accompanied by Vice Presidents Professor Kevin Urama, Dr Kevin Kariuki, Dr Beth Dunford, Solomon Quaynor, Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade and Simon Mizrahi.

The Bank will on Wednesday launch its annual African Economic Outlook report, a flagship publication on the state of African economies.

Experts say the government has not denied such alternative financing instruments, but there have not been bold initiatives from the institutions to take advantage of such opportunities.

Speaking to The Citizen, a finance and banking analyst from the University of Dar es Salaam, Dr Tobias Swai, said financing sources such as social and development bonds have been active in Tanzania.

However, he said initiatives such as diaspora bonds have not been developed in the market.

“There have not been bold initiatives from the institutions to utilise such opportunities,” he said.

He added that neither the private sector nor government parastatals have developed projects that can attract such sophisticated funding sources. Dr Swai added that there is a need to create strong institutions in governance and ensure accountability of the funds, having quite good track records to protect the investors’ money.

“We’ve had several uncontrolled crowdfunding programmes, and proponents of such schemes have faced court charges for misappropriation of funds and failing to deliver on promises..”

According to him, the initiative to issue social bonds through semi-government-owned financial institutions such as banks is a good start.

According to him, projects such as Building a Better Tomorrow, which is currently undertaken by the ministry of Agriculture, may form an important start for initiating good projects to be funded by such financing instruments.

Last year, NMB Bank issued the Jasiri Bond, a type of social bond and the first gender-based financial instrument to list on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange and cross-list to the Luxembourg Stock Exchange. Commenting on that, an economist from the University of Dodoma (Udom), Dr Lutengano Mwinuka, said there is great productivity and opportunity for the government not only to save money but to implement small to large development projects.

He added that another unique opportunity is the high possibility of implementing projects, even those with a high risk for the government.

“We really need guidelines, systems, and a friendly environment for the implementation of these methods. Some of these methods have been mentioned in the implementation of the current Five-Year National Development Plan (2021/22-2025/26),” he said.

According to him, the speed of using these methods through public-private partnerships will help implement development projects in the country.

He cited the example of Ethiopia, which managed to build its electric dam only by using diaspora bonds.

An economist at Mzumbe University, Dr Daudi Ndaki, said crowdfunding is a revolutionary financial tool that has been transforming the landscape of entrepreneurial funding worldwide, and Tanzania is no exception.

The potential of crowdfunding in Tanzania is tremendous, with a booming population of young, tech-savvy individuals.

“The country is ripe for a surge in entrepreneurial activity,” he said.

“As Tanzania continues to foster its entrepreneurial ecosystem, crowdfunding platforms have a pivotal role to play. By providing a democratic, transparent, and accessible avenue for funding. They can propel a new generation of Tanzanian entrepreneurs towards success,” he insisted.

‘Cautions needed’

The principal economist at the Bank of Tanzania’s (BoT) Directorate of Economic Research and Policy, Dr Lusajo Mwankemwa, stated that the Bank, as an advisor to governments on fiscal policies and debt management, is also looking at all financing options, including the possibility of diaspora bonds. It is the bank’s obligation to explore and evaluate the viability and implications of all financing alternatives and to advise the government accordingly.

“I want to assure you that BoT, as a government advisor on economic and fiscal policies, has been critically looking at the issue of alternative financing because we have the responsibility to ensure that our customer, the government, is borrowing at affordable costs from both domestic and foreign markets for effective implementation of development projects,” he said.

Dr Mwankemwa stated that there is still a lack of awareness about the matter, but if the government decides to pursue the arrangement, the bank, in collaboration with other government agencies, will have to educate the people, particularly the diaspora community, so that all Tanzanians, including those who are outside the country, will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of their home country.

Tourists who are looking for the most memorable summer experience are spoiled for choice when they explore Africa's natural beauty.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, 17 June 2022, /African Media Agency/- In many low- and middle-income countries, patient healthcare data is currently fragmented and largely collected, recorded, and stored in paper-based systems. The manual healthcare system can cause siloed medical records, limited patient verification, lack of accessibility and offline portability, and results in an inability to aggregate and report data efficiently.

This is why Mastercard, Gavi, the Ethiopia Ministry of Health and JSI today have announced a partnership to implement the Mastercard Wellness Pass solution within Ethiopia’s health information system, with the aim of bringing efficiency to healthcare tracking and offline portability of health records in the most marginalized communities.

Wellness Pass is an interoperable and offline portable healthcare credential – accessible within a trusted network that creates continuity of care by allowing a patient’s medical data to be stored offline and travel with them on their Mastercard Community Pass chip card, which every patient receives from participating health facilities when they get their first vaccine or health service. For clinicians, Wellness Pass ensures that the vaccination records are available any time through participating health facilities, regardless of connectivity, and utilizes tokenized biometrics to verify service delivery and adhere to vaccination cycles.

This progressive initiative by the Ministry of Health is just one piece in the larger Information Revolution Agenda, an ambitious component of the Health Sector Transformation Plan that seeks to improve the availability, accessibility, affordability, and quality of primary health care, thereby improving health and wellbeing of the Ethiopian population.

The partnership aims to implement the Wellness Pass technology through several phases. Phase one of the implementation will be focused on Covid-19 vaccination tracking and will be deployed at health facilities throughout the country, including both urban and rural locations, over a 15-month period. Phase two plans to scale the use of Wellness Pass across multiple health care programs, to be determined in partnership with the Ministry of Health.

Creating efficiencies by improving health data accessibility

Mastercard’s Wellness Pass in Ethiopia is the second implementation on the continent, after the launch in Mauritania, which aims to digitize the childhood immunization program to ensure consistent and improved service delivery to parents and children across health facilities and to ensure that government and health partners can access trusted data in an aggregated form to inform policy and decision making.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and Mastercard have been partnered since 2018, to deploy the Mastercard Wellness Pass to eligible countries, with the aim to not only deliver vaccines to millions of individuals, but also, using Mastercard’s technology, enable digitization of health records in the form of contactless cards.

“Ensuring the equitable distribution of vaccines is critical for the world to emerge from this pandemic, and it will take a collective response by the public and private sector. Working together with Gavi, the Ethiopia Ministry of Health and JSI, this partnership will allow us to bring private sector technology and capabilities to the table to support efforts to make sure that everyone has access to critical health care and that that care is delivered in an efficient and effective manner,” says Michael Froman, Vice Chairman and President of Strategic Growth, Mastercard.

“The digitisation of vaccination records through the Mastercard Wellness Pass enables us to reach and to continue to care for patients with vital health services such as immunisation. This digital technology will support Ethiopia’s national health response program by enabling the continuity of patient care through the portability of digitized health records. These will be in the form of contactless cards for patients that can be used by health facilities in both connected and offline environments. The portable health credentials will improve healthcare by decentralizing patient record keeping and facilitating better recording, tracking, and patient adherence to vaccination cycles. This will benefit not only the patient, but also healthcare service providers, and the Ministry of Health.

“Lack of healthcare data portability has a definite impact on the levels of service utilisation and health outcomes among people in different geographical areas and socio-economic groups. Therefore, it is very important to solve this great challenge, and it will take a collective response by public and private sectors to reach the necessary scale, and this is why we are excited about this new partnership, one that is designed to enable us to provide the best possible care to our citizens, regardless of where they are,” says Dr Lia Tadesse from Ministry of Health.

Gov’t Intensifying Supply of Aid to People Affected by Disasters in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa June 10/2022/ENA/ The Government of Ethiopia has been supplying humanitarian support to people affected by manmade and natural disasters in various parts of the country in collaboration with various partners, according to Government Communication Service.

Government Communication Service State Minister Selamawit Kassa told journalists today about the amount of food and non-food assistance distributed in various parts of the country to help people affected by disasters up until June 3, 2022.

She stated that in addition to the humanitarian assistance the 11 million victims of the war in Amhara Region are receiving, 11,000 metric tons of additional food supplies was sent to more than 775,000 citizens as per the request of the regional government.

In addition, 483 metric tons of food has been supplied to 128,000 displaced people in Northern Wollo and Wag Himera.

Similarly, 1,371 metric tons of food has been supplied to nearly 200,000 people that are internally displaced in Guji Zone of Oromia Region, it was stated.

In the Afar region, 19,500 tons of food were supplied, according to state minister, who added that the food supply has benefited more than 630,000 needy people.

Moreover, 86,700 metric tons of nutritious food was supplied to Tigray Region by land in collaboration with the international donors, Selamawit said.

In the last two months alone, 782,000 liters of fuel were also supplied to the region.

According to her, over 216,000 kilograms of medicines and medical supplies were flown to Tigray Region.

Among the issues raised by her during the media briefing was the stay of Political and Security Committee members of the European Union representing the 27 member countries that are in Addis Ababa.

Among their discussion points with the Ethiopian officials will be the Ethiopian government’s interest in conducting a joint investigation with the European Union regarding the atrocities committed by the TPLF in the Amhara and Afar regions, Selamawit revealed.

Regarding the Green Legacy Initiative, she added that the usual planting of trees will continue in the rainy season.

The new thing in this round is that planting will also take place in various embassy compounds, especially in those with large compounds.

WFP Largest Convoy Arrives in Tigray

Addis Ababa June 11/2022/ENA/ World Food Program (WFP) disclosed today that its largest convoy of 308 trucks has arrived in Tigray this week.

In the tweet it posted today, WFP stated that “our largest humanitarian convoy to date of 308 trucks arrived into Tigray this week carrying enough food to meet needs of further 800,000 people.”

In the week ahead, the programme will start a new 6-week round of food distributions in Afar and Amhara regions, after completing recent deliveries, it was learned.

Addis Ababa June 11/2022/ENA/ Ethiopian Embassy in Uganda and the Association of Uganda Tour Operators co-organized a Tourism Workshop under the theme “Ethiopia: Land of Origins -Your Next Tour Destination” in an effort to promote inter-Africa tourism.

In delivering opening remarks, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Uganda, Alemtshay Meseret, said the workshop is aimed to introduce Ethiopian tourism destinations to Ugandan tour operators and enhance cooperation in the sector.

Participants of the tourism workshop have tasted the unique and delicious Ethiopian cuisine and coffee, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Representing Ugandan Tourism Board, Yognesh called for promoting inter-Africa tourism and urged Ugandan tour operators to discover Ethiopia and vice versa. She added that it is high time to tap into Africa’s immense tourism potential.

An Ethiopian senior expert in the Ministry of Tourism, Sisay Getachew, explained on his part what makes Ethiopia a preferred tourist destination.

He urged tour operators of Uganda and Ethiopia to build business relationships and promote the region as a single destination.

In delivering closing remarks, Tourism Ethiopia CEO Sileshi Girma reflected on the key transformation being undertaken in the tourism sector in Ethiopia.

The CEO also expressed Ethiopia’s keen interest to create a joint regional tourism capacity with countries in East Africa to compete in the global tourism market.
