Beacon assists Calliste Government School

On Wednesday, 17 May 2023, The Beacon Insurance Company Ltd., generously donated $1,000 to assist the Calliste Government School with its School Feeding Programme.

Molly Roberts, Branch Manager at Beacon Grenada, presented the cheque to school principal Antoinette Lewis, in front of faculty and students at the school.

Speaking at the handover, Roberts said Beacon was happy to make the contribution as the company strives to make a positive impact on the lives of students within the communities they serve. The programme serves a healthy breakfast to approximately 30 students and lunch to approximately 160 students every day. Beacon chose to assist the Calliste Government School after a period of careful review as the school is one in need.

Upon accepting the donation, Lewis expressed her sincere thanks to Beacon. “On behalf of the teachers and students at the school, we thank you sincerely!” Principal Lewis went on to speak about the positive effects of well-nourished students. “Breakfast is important! Lunch is important! Children that have a healthy, nutritious breakfast in the mornings, will have them focused, attentive and will also increase their attendance at the school.”

Beacon has pledged to enrich and enhance the lives of those in the communities in which it operates through the creation of opportunities for development and growth. The company has been in the insurance industry for over 40 years, with operations spanning the region. Their headquarters are in Trinidad & Tobago, with branches in St Lucia, Grenada and Barbados. They also maintain agencies in St Vincent, Dominica and St Kitts & Nevis.

TAMCC hosts tropical agriculture study-abroad mission

TA Marryshow Community College (TAMCC) hosted students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T) as part of their faculty-led study abroad for the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Multicultural Scholars Programme. This programme aims to provide career-enhancing opportunities to underrepresented students to prepare them for the food and agricultural sciences workforce.

This work is funded and supported by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the lead federal agency that supports higher education in agriculture-related sciences. Faculty and students gained cultural awareness in an international setting, practicing research, technology, and communication skills.

The students conducted a poster session on 16 May 2023 at TAMCC as part of their mission. Their research focused on various tropical agriculture topics centred on their academic disciplines, which include Agricultural Education, Animal Science, Food and Nutritional Sciences, and Sustainable Land and Food Systems.

Programme project director Dr Paula E Faulkner, faculty in the Department of Agribusiness, Applied Economics and Agriscience Education, and Dr Meeshay Williams-Wheeler, faculty in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, accompanied the students.

Dr Faulkner told NOW Grenada that her team benefitted greatly from this exchange. “Both institutions gained knowledge about academic programs each institution offers for students to gain degrees in agriculture, early childhood education, and education, which can benefit students in their academic endeavours.”

“Possible student and faculty exchanges will be options, along with MOUs and affiliations. During discussions between NC A&T faculty, TAMCC faculty and administrators, and government officials, possible future projects on the best ways to increase the number of underrepresented groups choosing degree programmes and careers in agriculture and related fields were discussed due to the wealth of agriculture resources in Grenada,” she added.

The team met with various officials from TAMCC, including Principal Dr Ronald Brunton; Marva Bowen Neptune, Registrar; Kenrick McSween, Dean School of Arts, Sciences and Professional Studies; Samuel Andrew, Maribeau Campus Director and Jeremy Hagley, Maribeau Instructor. They also met Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports, & Culture Elvis Morain and Chief Education Officer Angela Finley.

During a campus visit at St George’s University, the team was guided by Ravicka Phillip. NC A&T faculty and students also visited the Grenada Produce Chemistry Laboratory and Mirabeau Campus, Grand Etang Rainforest and Lake, Grenville Fish Market, Concord Falls Nutmeg Museum, Diamond Chocolate Factory, Underwater Sculpture Park, and Belmont Estate.

Dr Faulkner explained, “We learned about Grenada and possible ways to partner on future projects, such as educating students and seeking possible grants to enhance campus facilities and resources. The 4 students gained global agriculture knowledge by participating in lectures, laboratory tours, and field trips throughout Grenada; enhanced technology and communication skills by developing and presenting their research findings; and increased cultural competencies.” She added, “Upon their return to the US, the students will continue sharing what they learned by writing and presenting reports on the differences and similarities they discovered between the US and tropical agriculture systems.”

Dr Faulkner indicated that other possible initiatives and strategic partnerships that can be derived include faculty and student exchanges with other colleges at NC A&T, such as the Colleges of Engineering and Science and Technology. Other possible initiatives could involve partnerships and exchanges with St George’s University.

Associate Dean of Continuing Education at TAMCC, Dr John Telesford, organised the NC A&T team’s tours throughout Grenada, assisted by Dr Tessa Barry, Agriculture and Rural Development Consultant.

CCRIF 2023 Scholarship and Internship Programmes for Caribbean Nationals

CCRIF invites Caribbean nationals to apply for its scholarship and internship programmes for 2023 (https://www.ccrif.org/scholarship and https://www.ccrif.org/ccrif –uwi –scholarships for scholarships and https://www.ccrif.org/regional internship –programme for internships).

Since 2010, CCRIF has been providing undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships to Caribbean nationals in areas related to disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, meteorology, environmental management, and civil engineering among others. In 2015, the Facility launched its flagship internship programme for Caribbean nationals by partnering with regional organisations and governments to host these interns and provide them with the opportunity to integrate their academic knowledge with the work environment.

In addition to being the world’s first risk pool providing parametric insurance to its 24 members, (19 Caribbean Governments, 3 Central American Governments and 2 Caribbean public utilities), CCRIF is also committed to building capacity and resilience in disaster risk management among its members. This is done through the CCRIF Technical Assistance

Programme, whereby support is provided to member countries and regional organisations in the development and implementation of disaster risk management and climate change adaptation projects and programmes. The CCRIF Scholarship and Internship Programmes are also part of the TA Programme. The CCRIF TA Programme operates as the Facility’s corporate social responsibility programme and consists of 4 components.

At the launch of this year’s scholarship and internship programmes, CCRIF CEO Isaac Anthony said, “As a development insurance company, CCRIF is committed to creating a more sustainable future for the region we call home. The scholarship and internship programmes were designed to build a cadre of professionals who can effectively contribute to comprehensive disaster risk management and reduce the vulnerabilities in the region, build resilience and fulfill the ambition of making the Caribbean the world’s first climate-resilient region in the world.”

Since the first scholarships and first internships were offered in 2010 and 2015 respectively, CCRIF has provided 165 scholarships for postgraduate and undergraduate study totalling US$1.7 million and 152 internships totalling US$409,000.

For 2023, CCRIF will continue to provide 4 scholarships of US$8,000 each to UWI students for their second and final years of their undergraduate degree. At the postgraduate level, CCRIF will provide 6 scholarships of US$11,000 each to students at Caribbean universities, including The UWI (Cave Hill, Mona and St. Augustine campuses), University of Technology Jamaica, University of Guyana, and University of Trinidad and Tobago among others. Eligible areas of study include but are not limited to Geography/Geology, Disaster Risk Management, Natural Resources Management, Climate Change, Civil Engineering, Meteorology and Land Management.

The deadline for 2023 applications to both scholarship programmes is 3 July 2023.

CCRIF’s Regional Internship Programme is designed to provide opportunities for recent university graduates who have degrees in the areas of disaster risk management, environmental management, actuarial science, geography, climate studies and other similar areas to be assigned to national and regional organisations in the Caribbean where their educational experience can be enhanced through practical work assignments.

Host organisations have included national disaster management and meteorology agencies as well as regional entities, including the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH), Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM), Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), Association of Caribbean States (ACS), Caribbean Centre for Development Administration (CARICAD), Office of Disaster and Emergency Management (ODPEM) Jamaica, and departments and centres within The UWI, among many other organisations. CCRIF provides stipends to all its interns and accommodation allowances when interns are assigned to organisations outside of their home country.

The deadline for 2023 applications to the regional internship programme is 9 June 2023.

The CCRIF Internship Programme is one of the largest in the Caribbean Region for areas related to disaster risk management and is welcomed by both young graduates and host organisations. Kenneth Kerr, a former Climate Specialist at the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service, had this to say after hosting interns for a few years: “The programme continues to grow the local scientific community footprint/talent in many ways and provides opportunities to foster relationships through mentorship and training. It allows for building a stream of young and qualified talents and offers them scope to try out different avenues along their career paths.”

A series of consultations on the OECS Harmonized Primary School’s Curriculum will be hosted this week by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the OECS through the OECS PEARL.

The consultations are carded for both the 16th and 17th of June.

National Coordinator – Charlene White Christian says she hopes that as many stakeholders can be engaged, both within the private sector and the public sector.

Grade Six National Assessment set for June 23-24

The Ministry of Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training, and National Excellence will administer the annual Grade Six National Assessment (G6NA) on Thursday, June 23, and Friday, June 24, 2022. A total of 854 students will be taking the exams across 70 centres around the island- 417 girls and 437 boys. The exams are set to begin at 7:45 am.

The Ministry will continue to observe the Covid-19 protocols, such as the wearing of masks and sanitization of hands. The Ministry of Education has also made every effort to ensure that students will be seated at least 3 feet from each other. While the exam will follow the same format as in the past, this year, one paper, the Social Sciences paper, will be done in an online format. Students have already been given practice in taking this test, having done two (2) mock tests online.

On Thursday, students will take the Language Arts and Social Sciences papers, while on Friday, they will take the Mathematics and Science and Technology Papers. All papers are in multiple choice format, with the Language Arts having an additional written composition aspect.

The Ministry of Education requests that parents, or anyone not directly involved with the exam or the school, NOT remain on the compound of any testing centre while the examinations are in progress. The Ministry of Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training, and National Excellence wishes every student success in the upcoming assessments.

GFNC National Secondary Schools’ Nutrition Quiz Final results

The St George’s Institute is the winner of this year’s Secondary Schools’ Nutrition Quiz.

This is their first time competing in the quiz, where they dethroned defending champions Bishop’s College with 72½ points, leaving Bishop’s College to settle for second with 71½ points. Grenville Secondary School claimed the third spot with 62½ after an intense sudden death round, pushing St Mark’s Secondary School into 4th place on 57½ points.

Four secondary schools competed in the quiz held on Wednesday, 27 April at the Youth Centre, Grand Anse. Individual prizes were awarded to students and teachers representing the top 3 schools. All participants received certificates of participation.

The National Nutrition Quiz is organised by the Grenada Food & Nutrition Council. The primary competition was held on 4 April and was won by Woburn Methodist School.

First Macmillan Education Summer webinar

Macmillan Education Caribbean has announced its first event for its upcoming Summer of Science.

The event will be a webinar, hosted by Discover Science author Deborah Roberts, and will be all about turning primary scientists into CSEC® level scientists.

Deborah Roberts has vast experience in education, as both an educator herself and a teacher trainer, as well as in writing for the Caribbean. Working with advisors from across the Caribbean islands, she developed this series with a range of curriculums in mind, making the series highly adaptable for classrooms across the Caribbean.

The Discover Science series acts as a smooth transition from primary science education to secondary education. This is compounded by its relationship to Deborah’s previous science series, Mission: Science.

The webinar will be hosted twice on Wednesday, 15 June, at 7 am EST and 1 pm EST to cater to a variety of schedules. The session will look at themes, such as developing research as a key skill in young scientists, harnessing students’ interests as a tool for deepening their scientific skills, and how educators can create independent, practical thinkers and scientists. The webinar sessions aim to create confident teachers who can deliver student-led science lessons across the Caribbean. The webinar will be touching on several features in the books, such as projects, real-world application, and the integration of STEAM learning as the world increasingly values skills rooted in technology.

This webinar follows a fortnight of social media spotlighting the incredible Caribbean scientists shaping their fields and fun facts taken from the Discover Science series.

When asked about the upcoming event, Deborah Roberts said: “The transition from primary to secondary doesn’t have to be a challenge, as the skills acquired through enquiry-based learning lead to understanding content at a much deeper intellectual level. I am very much looking forward to delivering this webinar.”

This event is just the first in Macmillan Education Caribbean’s lineup for the Summer of Science campaign, running online from 6 June to 12 September. Spotlighting several of the titles in Macmillan Education Caribbean’s extensive range of science series’, the Summer of Science is a chance for both science educators and the Caribbean’s budding young scientists to develop their skills and reignite their passion for this vital subject.
