The Central Organization of Trade Unions (Cotu) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has said Deputy President William Ruto will only become the president of Kenya, once he ceases calling him ‘mzee wa nyororo’. The firebrand trade unionist also said that should the DP one day seek his support to become the president of Kenya, he wouldn't hesitate to help him. “He is a very good leader... he is a shrewd, what he is lacking are good advisors... I will advise him correctly on how to become a president and I swear he will become one. But if he still calls me mzee ile ya nyororo he will continue struggling with his problems,” Atwoli said. Mr Atwoli also disclosed that when the DP was facing criminal charges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Hague, he gifted him a rosary. “If he (Ruto) is not careful, Raila (Odinga) will hand over this government to Martha Karua and she will become the president of the Republic of Kenya,” Atwoli said. “Kenyan government is part of global government on issues of integrity. If issues of integrity surrounding William Samoei Ruto were clearly followed and checked he would not be allowed to be on the ballot,” he added. Dr Ruto is contesting the presidency against Raila Odinga (Azimio la Umoja), George Wajackoyah (Roots Party) and Mwaure Waihiga (Agano Party) in the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has dared the Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss George Kinoti to arrest him over claims that he is a suspect in an international criminal syndicate. This after Mr Kinoti said the senator and officials of Team University in Uganda, where the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate for the Nairobi gubernatorial race claims to have acquired a degree, are suspects in an international organised crime syndicate. “We will not surrender our capital city to frauds. We will involve all international agencies in investigating and prosecuting anyone involved in academic fraud,” Mr Kinoti told the Nation. But in his response, Mr Sakaja said he will not be intimidated and dared the DCI boss to make good his threats. "Threats of arrest and persecution by the state will not intimidate us or change the will of the people of Nairobi. Our resolve remains firm. Bwana DCI Kinoti, I'm at my Riverside office, karibu or let me know if you'd like me to come over," Sakaja said. "Your office will not install a project on the people of Nairobi. My qualifications are legit and the relevant institutions have refused to play along with your games. Let the people decide," the senator went on. Mr Sakaja has been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to contest for the top county seat but is currently battling several petitions touching on his academic qualifications. The petitions include those questioning his academic qualifications and specifically a degree he says he acquired from Teams University in Kampala. The said degree has since been revoked by the Commission for University Education (CUE). If found guilty of forging his academic degree certificate and transcripts, Mr Sakaja faces a three-year jail term. But even as the embattled senator fights to clear his name, he has received support from Deputy President William Ruto, who on Thursday lashed out at the authorities, demanding that Mr Sakaja be left alone. “I am telling my competitors and my former (political) party Jubilee. Please leave Sakaja alone,” Ruto said during a campaign rally in Nyamira County. “Sakaja has gone to school and we have seen his papers. Stop taking him round in circles. The deep state and system are making calls all over the place. They have even called State House in Uganda while looking for means to stop Sakaja from contesting for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat,” the DP said.

Exiled Kenyan lawyer Miguna Miguna has moved to a Canadian court seeking Sh1.8 billion compensation in a case which he has sued Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and his Principal Secretary, Karanja Kibicho. Dr Miguna, whose predicaments began on January 30, 2018 with the mock swearing-in of ODM party leader, Raila Odinga, as the "people's president", has also sued two companies namely System International Telemarketing (Sitel) group and Sitel Operating Corporation and Rifinitiv Limited. In his petition filed at Ontario Superior Court in Canada, Dr Miguna says that in several occasions he had suffered at the hands of the Kenyan government under instructions given by Dr Matiang'i. As a result, the fiery lawyer also says he suffered general damages for malicious prosecution, unlawful detention, torture, assault and battery. He is seeking compensation for general damages for libel, defamation and slander. Other compensations he is demanding include loss of income, intentional infliction of mental, emotional and psychological distress, trauma and anguish. Dr Miguna claims that in February 2018 he was abducted at gunpoint from his house in Nairobi by government security agents under the instructions of Dr Matiang'i and Mr Kibicho. According to Dr Miguna, after the abduction he was held incommunicado for six days. "After that I was forcefully taken to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by security agents and was forcefully bundled into a KLM flight bound to Amsterdam," he says in the petition, adding that all this happened at time when there was a court order for his release. Other than claiming that his house in Nairobi was destroyed using military explosives, Dr Miguna also accuses the Kenyan authorities of revoking his citizenship, which he acquired by birth. He says he attempted to re-enter the country on March 26, 2018, but his efforts were foiled by officers at JKIA. This, he says, was despite a court order that barred the officers from harming him. He says he was detained inside a dirty toilet within the JKIA premises before he was finally sedated and placed inside a plane that left for Dubai. Dr Matiang'i and Mr Kibicho have 60 days to respond to the allegations that we’re tabled against them, if they will be served the petition while in Kenya. “If you fail to defend this proceedings, judgment may be given against you in your absence and without further notice to you. If you wish to defend the proceedings but you are unable to pay legal fees, legal aid may be available to you by contacting a local legal office,” a directive to the respondents contained in the petition reads in part.

Roots Party presidential candidate Prof George Wajackoya has hit back at Lang’ata parliamentary candidate Felix Odiwuor aka Jalang'o for rubbishing his pledge to legalise marijuana, if elected president. The ODM parliamentary candidate had termed Prof Wajackoya’s pledge as a hype that will be met with rejection on the ballot come August 9. "It is a hype and we agree that it is a hype that everybody's talking about. But I can tell you that politics is very different... it is a hype and Wajackoya will not go anywhere with it," Jalango said. But in his response, Prof Wajackoya described the comedian-turned-politician as a "brainless Cerelac kid." "Jalang'o is a Cerelac kid... that boy has no brains... Jalango, take your nonsense away... we will soon probe how you acquired that degree certificate of yours," Prof Wajackoya said. Prof Wajackoya is among the four presidential candidates who have been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to run for president. Among the controversial pledges that he has made to Kenyans is that he will legalise marijuana for commercial use and enact snake farming laws to generate revenues for settling the country's ballooning national debt. Prof Wajackoya has also promised Kenyans that if elected president, they will only have to work for four days in a week.

Former Nairobi Diaries cast member Mishi Dorah is still languishing in jail, more than two weeks after she was charged in court for failure to settle a huge bill she accumulated on expensive drinks at an entertainment joint in Nairobi. The actress-cum-socialite, who is famous for posting huge alcohol bills on social media, was on June 3 arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts for failing to pay a Sh152,550 bill at Golden Ice Bistro in Nairobi on the night of May 26 and the morning of May 27. The court was told how the accused, whose real name is born Dianah Clara Ojenge, was served with two chicken breasts valued at Sh3, 000, one cocktail valued at Sh2000, two bottles of 300ml soda valued at Sh500, a one litre bottle of drinking water valued at Sh400 and three bottles of an energy drink valued at Sh1,650. The accused is also reported to have ordered six bottles of Bellaire Luxe 750ml valued at Sh75,000and seven Hennessey VS 750ml valued at Sh70,000 which she took with a group of friends by falsely pretending that she would pay a fact she knew to be false. She was granted a Sh100,000 bond with an alternative cash bail of Sh50,000, but two weeks down the line she is yet to secure her freedom. Her predicament has attracted the attention of her fellow cast member on Nairobi Diaries, Stacy Vugusta aka Pendo, who is now appealing to her fans to help her raise money to bail out Mishi. Interestingly, Pendo herself was in a similar situation in 2020 when she arraigned in a Mombasa court for failing to pay a Sh208,000 hotel bill. Apparently, Pendo accumulated a bill of Sh330,000 at the luxurious English Point Marina hotel in Mombasa but only settled Sh145,000 with a promise to clear the balance of Sh208,000 within two weeks. But the hotel management declined to accept her offer and instead detained her at the facility while demanding full payment. The two-week period elapsed without Pendo paying the remaining amount even as the bill continued accumulating. The management then decided to report her to the police and she was arrested and arraigned in court. She is said to have checked into the hotel in the company of an unidentified man believed to be her lover. The two spend a few days together at the high-end hotel before the man allegedly abandoned her. She denied the charges in court and was subsequently released on a cash bail of Sh35,000 with an alternative of Sh100,000 bond. The court gave her six months to clear the bill.

A young man stunned an Eldoret court on Thursday after confessing to stealing an underwear, a packet of crisps, a travel bag and a motorcycle helmet from a retail supermarket. The court heard that on Wednesday June 14, 2022, David Rop, 19, walked into Naivas Supermarket in Eldoret and stole a male boxer, a helmet, crisps and a travel bag worth Sh3,869. Rop was Thursday arraigned before Eldoret Senior Principal Magistrate and pleaded guilty to the offence. He told the court that he regretted his action and would not repeat it again. “I am remorseful about what I did. I ask this court to forgive me and I promise to completely change,” he told the court. The court directed the accused to be remanded at the Eldoret GK Prison for a week, awaiting a probation report to ascertain whether he qualifies for a non-custodial sentence. The case will be mentioned on June 20. In the same court, police were ordered to detain a 19-year-old man suspected of defiling a 13-year-old girl at Soy market, Uasin Gishu county. The suspect was held at Soy Police station. In another case, a 67-year-old man denied a charge of attempting to defile a three-year-old minor at Yamumbi Estate in Kapseret Sub-County. The DP then went on to receive a BSc in Botany and Zoology from the University of Nairobi, graduating in 1990. He later enrolled for a MSc in Plant ecology, graduating in 2011. The following year, he enrolled for a PhD at the University of Nairobi and graduated in December 2018. The fake Ruto degree has emerged at a time when several political figures, including Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja, are under scrutiny over their academic credentials. Nairobi gubernatorial candidate as at the center of a controversy over his degree certificate whose authenticity is being questioned. UoN, where Sakaja initially said he graduated from, has said the senator is a student at the institution but is yet to graduate. According to UoN, Sakaja was enrolled in 2003 but is yet to graduate from the university. The senator was cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to run for governor after he presented a degree certificate from Team University in Uganda, only for the Commission for University Education (CUE) to revoke the degree.

ODM stalwarts James Orengo and Oburu Oginga are trailing in their respective quests for elective positions in Siaya County in the August 9, General Election, results of a new opinion poll has indicated. The poll by Mizani Africa shows that in the gubernatorial race, United Democratic Movement (UDM) candidate, Nicolas Gumbo, is ahead with 50.3 per cent with Mr Orengo a distant second at 40 per cent. The two candidates are in the race to succeed Governor Cornel Rasanga who is serving his last term in office. Senator Orengo is a close ally of Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya Coalition Party presidential candidate Raila Odinga. In the senatorial race, the Azimio flagbearer's elder brother Oburu Oginga is also behind businessman Tony Yogo. Mr Yogo leads with 34.4 per cent, with the East African Legislative assembly (Eala) MP, Oginga, at 30 per cent. Mr Oginga has been endorsed by Mr Odinga as the most suitable candidate in the race following his long service to the county. In December last year, Mr Odinga asked the public to consider his 79-year-old brother for the senatorial position and Mr Orengo for governor. "It is embarrassing for Dr Oburu to beg you to elect him, he has the experience, having served as a Member of Parliament for over 20 years and currently he is in the Eala. You don't expect me to come and campaign for Dr Oburu and Orengo, you can decide this as electorates of Siaya," said Mr Odinga. In the Woman Representative race, the battle is between radio journalist Sella Ayimba of MDG party and Christine Ombaka of ODM with Ayimba commanding a 43 per cent lead followed by Ombaka with 39.5 per cent. The polls outcome also show stiff competition in the other elective positions in the county which for years has been an ODM stronghold.

Lang'ata Member of Parliament Nixon Korir has blasted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss George Kinoti for threatening to arrest Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja. In a statement on his Facebook page, Mr Korir said that Mr Kinoti was only out to taint the image of Mr Sakaja with claims that the senator is part of an international criminal syndicate. On Thursday, Mr Kinoti said the senator and officials of Team University in Uganda, where the latter claims to have acquired a degree, are suspects in an international organised crime syndicate. But in his reaction, Mr Korir accused Mr Kinoti of what he termed as media prosecution. "His media prosecution is aimed at tainting peoples names for political expediency. Mr Kinoti is the king of media prosecution... Sakaja will be in the ballot,” said Mr Korir, who is serving his first term in the National Assembly. The MP made the remarks just hours after Mr Sakaja dared the DCI boss to arrest him. “Threats of arrest and persecution by the state will not intimidate us or change the will of the people of Nairobi. The Nairobi Senator has had a week to forget following the escalating controversy over his academic credentials. Mr Sakaja has been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to contest for the top county seat but is currently battling several petitions touching on his academic qualifications.

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja on Friday presented himself at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters with a protest letter following reports of a looming arrest. In his letter to the DCI boss George Kinoti, through Mutuma Gchuru and Associates Advocates, Sakaja said he has not received any summon from the DCI. His protest was prompted by an article in Daily Nation where Kinoti was reported to have said Mr Sakaja and officials of Team University in Uganda, where the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate for the Nairobi gubernatorial race claims to have acquired a degree, are suspects in an international organised crime syndicate. Also, in his letter, the Nairobi gubernatorial candidate wanted to know if the detectives had already concluded their investigations regarding his degree. However, the senator was turned away with the National Police Service saying no police action was taken since Mr Sakaja had not be invited. Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso also dismissed reports that had been shared on social media to the effect that Sakaja had been arrested. “He was cordially received by officers and turned and turned away since he had not been summoned. He, therefore, left without any further police action,” Shioso said. The UDA gubernatorial candidate had earlier in the day dared Mr Kinoti to arrest him, saying that his degree certificate is genuine. Mr Sakaja is blaming his political opponents for his troubles, saying the questions that are being raised about his academic credentials are politically instigated. He has specifically accused President Uhuru Kenyatta and his ruling Jubilee Party of working to ensure that he doesn't become the city's next governor.
